Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith Jon Krakauer

A history of polygamy in the US John Krakauer's account of the history of polygamy in the US is both well researched and enthralling. He simultaneously spins two tales, one of modern day fundamentalists driven to horrifying actions by their faith, and the other of the founding of the Church of ...

Things Fall Apart: A Novel Chinua Achebe
Anchor, 1994
What makes fiction important I know this is the classic debate of all time when it comes to literature: Is it about beautifully written prose (THE STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE, incidentally, is a good example of this problem) or does it tell a compelling story? (yet the prose itself is not its strong ...

So they said it was Vulgar They've warned you, the book is vulgar. They've warned you it's not for the timid. You've been told to go away if you have a week stomach. If you can't handle the radicalness, you'd better turn around and go right back to the safest section in the bookstore.
But, ...

Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster Jon Krakauer
Anchor, 1999
Breathless I was on lunch break at a previous job and reading Walden Pond by Henry David Thoreau for the second time in my life. My co-worker comes up to me and said, "is that a good book, I've never read it?". I told him it was a book I could relate to, because I too like being ...

Into the Wild Jon Krakauer
Anchor, 2007
Haunting and spellbinding I purchased this book after watching the movie and, believe me, the book was just as haunting as the movie. The book is written exceptionally well and I found this book difficult to put down. Naturally, I read the book in three days. However, there were parts of the ...

The Wisdom of Crowds James Surowiecki
Anchor, 2005
great stuff! I read this for a MBA class. Out of the stack of books assigned, so far, this is the only one I liked. It is relevant to today's curious questions of how to get crowds engaged, how crowds behave, and why we even care.
I'm trying to teach people to work ...

Atonement Ian McEwan
Anchor, 2007
Briony as Unreliable Narrator _Atonement_ is a fine book, highly reminiscent of Elizabeth Bowen's work. But I don't understand why the common assessment of Briony as unreliable narrator seems to stop at her end-revelation that Cecilia and Robbie were killed without ever fulfilling their love.

Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West Hampton Sides
Anchor, 2007
Great Blood a lot of Thunder I have enjoyed this book as much as John Adams. Preconcieved ideas of history are put to rest. For the most part this is a part of history that has not been well documented for me. There was Lewis and Clark and then a big gap. This fills in the gap and is a must read.
