Philip Pullman
Laurel Leaf, 2003
Dark Materials a Triple Threat or Three Times a Charm? Awesome Novels!
When I saw the Golden Compass movie The Golden Compass (New Line Platinum Series Two-Disc Widescreen Edition) and the excellent acting of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig (much different than his 007 role that same year, obviously), I wanted to read the book. Then I saw ...
Bud, Not Buddy
Christopher Paul Curtis

Bud, Not Buddy
My 3rd grade class really enjoyed listening to this story. The adventures of Bud, while many times being funny, touch my students and help them to see what another 8 year old in a past era had to endure. Great story line.
The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963

WONDERFUL BOOK
This book is a must read for people of all ages. The relationships and insight of an African-American family during the 1960's is exceptional. I highly recommend it for grades 3rd-8th.

Black Ships Before Troy
Rosemary Sutcliff

Fantastic retelling of the Iliad
I'm reading this to my daughter, who loves the story. Some of the writing is a little complex for a first grader to understand, but this version has a beauty to the poetry of the writing that the DK version, though straightforward and more easily understood, does not. ...
The Cay
Theodore Taylor
Laurel Leaf, 2003
Good boy's book about race and respect
This short novel for boys tells how a white American boy becomes marooned with an old West Indian black man on a tiny island during World War II. It's simple, direct, often exciting, truthful, and well-observed. Along with the story of this archetypal relationship ...
The Giver

Superb book for young people
As a teacher of learning disabled students...I can say that all of my pupils loved this book. Some of the ideas might need a bit of explaining, but it is a story that kids can really get into.
Stargirl (Readers Circle)
Jerry Spinelli
Laurel Leaf, 2004
5 Stars for Stargirl
**SPOILERS** An absolutely amazing book. I remember reading it when I was younger and I didn't really understand it all that well. Reading it a few years later, it's so much better. I still hate and always will hate the ending, because Stargirl reads (although I ...
The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, Book 3)
Philip Pullman
Laurel Leaf, 2003
I was not disappointed.
Smitten: A Long Time Ago...in a Far Away Land... I finished the Amber Spyglass. With the first book, Golden Compass I was hooked. The action, adventure, and twists of the Golden Compass and then the Subtle Knife put me anxiously into the final book, The Amber ...
Brian's Winter

The Many Sacrifices of Living in the Wild
This book is so cool; it has lots of adventures and action. It is filled with animals. It is a great guide on living in the wild. Once you start reading this book you can't put it down. I enjoyed this book a lot because it reminds me so much of me and what I would do ...
Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter
Adeline Yen Mah
Laurel Leaf, 2001
Our class just finished this novel
My 6th grade class just finished reading this novel. The majority of us absolutely loved it. We had great discussions about how Adeline's parents never appreciated what wonderful gifts she had to offer in life. Also- we were all amazed how tragic her life was and her ...
Crash
Jerry Spinelli
Laurel Leaf, 2004
"Hut, Hut, Hut:"
I'm thinking of a five-letter word for a good, realistic book, and Crash is the word I'm looking for. It's by Jerry Spinelli, and if you like him, this is probably the best book he's written. Like most books by Spinelli, it's about someone different, but understands a ...
Whirligig

Excellent Young Adult Book With A Memorable Message
WHIRLIGIG starts out like so many other young adult books. Brent is a shallow high school junior who really wants to fit in with the popular crowd. He drinks too much at a party, a pretty girl he has a crush on publicly humiliates him and as result he makes a stupid ...
