Grishams bestseller breakthrough
The
Firm
by John Grisham is a thinking persons legal thriller. The character of young lawyer Mitch McDeere is easy to relate to. We were all young once looking for a good job after an education. It is easy to picture the wonderful The Firm movie actors who played the roles when you think about the people in the book. McDeere seems upset when he discovers that his new law office works mostly for the mob. I can reccomend all of Grishams books.
Great Book!
This is the third John Grisham book that I have read, and I think that it is by far the best! This book is a quick read and once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down!

One of Grishams's best books
This is an amazing book. It is over five hundred pages yet it keeps you glued the entire time. A great thriller that will keep you guessing and as usual with grisham's books hard to stop reading.
By far Grisham's very best work
I enjoy bashing authors like Grisham. These guys whip out formulaic froth and give contemporary novels a bad name. However, the
Firm
is one of those rare works by a hack writer that is actually enjoyable to read. This is a book that has been copied almost to death, so the plot structure is no longer as startling as it would have been upon publication. I think that you should give an author a little extra credit if his work does foster a legion of followers and that is exactly what this here book accomplished.
This is the second time I have read this book. The first was on its publication... decades ago now. But I still remembered twists of the plot even after all of that time. I still enjoyed the book. If you haven't read the Firm you are in for an edge of your seat novel of suspense that will almost force you to finish it very quickly.
Of course you can find dozens of authors and thousands of books better than this. But for a page turner, this will do the job and you wont feel pissed at yourself for having wasted time in a frivolous pursuit.

Solid, but not outstanding, legal thriller
I'm in the minority that prefers A Time to Kill to The
Firm
(the only two Grisham books I've read), but The Firm is a pretty good read too. Grisham isn't the most artistic writer; he has about as much descriptive ability as your typical car user's manual. Compared to A Time to Kill, I also found the characters to be less interesting and likeable (including the protagonist) and the dialogue lacked some of the previous book's terse wit. The first half or so of the book moves slowly and my interest slipped a few times, but when things finally start happening, the plot quickly picks up steam and roars to a gripping finish. Grisham's strength is his ability to ratchet up the intensity with a suspenseful plot, and here the suspense grips until the last couple of pages.
Overall, the writing is very plain and undescriptive, the characters static and only moderately interesting, and the story a bit sagging in the first half of the book, but the cat-and-mouse second half make it an enjoyable, if not truly outstanding, read.
