Didn't have high expectations, but was impressed

I didn't have high expectations for this KATEGORIE|/book" class="textlinks">book. First, it's about vampires and werewolves. And there are simply too many books about those creatures, and I wasn't looking forward to reading one. That genre, in my opinion has been overdone. Furthermore, most books about vampires and werewolves are merely plots along the lines of what these creatures are and what they do. The reason that I picked up this book initially is because it is set in Atlanta.
However, when I started to read it, I was actually impressed. The writer's treatment of vampires and werewolves is very different. Vampires are mindless monstrosities, and its the necromancers that you really need to look out for. The werecreatures are different too, and the fact that they can shift doesn't dominate the book, rendering it stupid. In fact, the were-culture adds to the setting, and as the vampires this is given a much different treatment than in other books. That said, it isn't heavy reading, but it was something quick and light to read after I finished Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. I truly enjoyed this book, and I like the character of Kate. She seems very realistic, and not pouty and complaining. The first person POV is very well done too. Not bad for a first novel. I recommend this book. A Great New Series

Simply amazing. This series is off with a bang and a deep mystery waiting to be answered. I'm glad I bought it so close to KATEGORIE|/book" class="textlinks">book 2 coming, it was, if possible, even better than this one. It left me smiling and happy. I've read everything from Twain to Dostevsky (probably spelled wrong, it's been awhile)and Ilona Andrews writes compelling human characters. I love it more with each read. A good start if your planning to try this emerging genre that is producing amazing stories, great characters and spans the wealth of human traits. A must for fans of Patricia Briggs, Kelley Armstrong and Kim Harrison.

Fun new series!

Ok the title kind of turned me off, but I read some other reviews and decided to buy the KATEGORIE|/book" class="textlinks">book. Hurray I am so happy to have found this author!!
I very much enjoyed this book: the characters are well-developed, the story-line and the mythos of the world are well crafted. Really, even the story and plot could be weak when the characters are so strong.

Here is something i really liked about this author's writing:
the way she describes smells sounds sights, & how she sets a scene: ie: the main character drinking a bottle of hard lemonade at her kitchen table, the way the morgue smells. I forgot i was sitting on my couch. I love it when a book makes me forget myself.

My final praise is for the author having some original and well thought out ideas about the urban fantasy setting, and the world she created, as well as a fresh look at shapechangers and magic. I was getting sick of so many books in this genre following the same stale pattern.

So, Im very happy to have found a new good urban fantasy series. Im dying waiting for the next book in the series, i have pre ordered it!

Unusual Premise

This KATEGORIE|/book" class="textlinks">book was enjoyable, but somewhat uneven. The premise was interesting and creative, but many of the interactions between characters were less than believable. Also, the premise that all preternatural creatures are sexual deviants was rather odd. The author wisely chose to let several facets of the story remain unexplained, no doubt for the sequel.

On a related note, the religious practices of Pre-Christian Europe are largely obscured by history, but speaking from an art-historical background, it absolutely does not make any sense to have a goddess-worshipping society send its priestesses to be eaten by monsters. Especially with a cyclical agrarian society which worships birth and rebirth. Bad theology makes my head hurt.
