Laid back Island thriller....
It was very cool to get an advance copy of the new
Stone
Barrington
novel. I felt like I was cheating getting to read it before everyone else! This time out Stone and Holly are on the trail of a rogue CIA agent who has become a hired assassin and is now supposedly hiding out on a tropical island. This thriller has a kick back feel because of the setting on a sunny Carribean island. I enjoyed the stew of island characters from the upper crusts who run the show to eccentric expats. Having traveled to St. Marks I can tell you Woods nailed the setting and the populace. The story takes its time getting rolling but the pacing towards the end is perfect. A fun, laid back thrill ride through the Carribean!

Fun in the sun
Nothing too complicated here: Woods' popular characters
Stone
Barrington
and Holly Barker return to chase waves, and one-time CIA operative-turned hired gun Teddy Fay on the Caribbean island of St. Marks. Woods lulls the reader with a relaxed, tropical vacation atmosphere, then turns up the heat when the local police chief is murdered. An enjoyable beach book that you could imagine Stone or Holly reading on the St. Marks sand.
Also recommended: A Stranger Lies There, a mystery based in the Palm Springs desert resort area. It won the Malice Domestic Award for best first mystery.

Good, not great!
When the bar has been set so high by an author like Stuart Woods, it isn't surprising that after 20 or more books the quality is likely to occasionally suffer. "
Shoot
Him
If He
Runs
" would probably get a five star review if it had been by a first time author, but when the author has written previous
novels
nothing short of top notch, like "Chiefs," "L.A. Dead," or "Worst Fears Realized," the true fan expects more. Even the return of
Stone
Barrington
and Holly Barker couldn't revive this sleepy effort.
I kept waiting for the tension to be racheted upward, or the plot to take an unexpected turn, but nothing happened. A competent story, told competently, but lacking the pizzazz we have come to expect from one of our favorite author whose next book we anxiously await year after year. Someone new to Stuart Woods, starting with "Shoot Him If He runs" might find it enjoyable to read, but will he/she become a true fan?
