THE STREET LAWYER is about Michael Brock who is doing everything that has always been expected of him. He's a lawyer for a huge law firm (Drake & Sweeney) where he bills an extortionate amount of hours, makes tons of money, and will soon be a partner. Then in a matter of a few minutes, his world comes crashing down around him. Michael becomes one of a homeless man's hostages in the firm's offices. After negotiations with the police falls through, they are all wondering if their lives have come to an end, but the homeless man is the one to lose his life. In doing so, Michael cannot forget what the man has said and begins digging deeper into the lives of the homeless. He's willing to throw all of his fortune away to help people and become the street people's lawyer. Then a secret is found out that could bring down Drake & Sweeney and lives have been lost to hold onto the secret. Now Michael's former partners are his enemies and only the reader will know the outcome after reading the last chapter.

This has to be my personal favorite John Grisham book. I didn't think anything could be better than The Pelican Brief or The Firm, and then Grisham comes along with THE STREET LAWYER. This book will definitely keep you awake to finish that last chapter. Definitely a STOP LIGHT BOOK (the type of book that you pick up when the traffic light is red, just to read a couple of paragraphs!) - that's one of my highest ratings!

From the Penthouse to the Streets

When death stares you in the face, do you reconsider your life? Well, this lawyer did, and he turned himself around. He went from working round the clock for money, to working round the clock for people's lives. When he finds out what his company has been hiding, he must decide what is the right thing to do. Should he ignore the information and continue on the fast track to money, or should he search for the truth and show it to the world? Because of the decision he makes, he ends up working against the same people he used to work along side. He becomes a saint in the eyes of the poor he helps; from defending the deaths of a young family to saving an addict from her drugs so she can see her son again. When you read this book, be prepared to sort out your priorities and question the motive of your work.

Audio book review

I listened to Michael Beck read this book on CD. While this is not Grisham's best work, I certainly enjoyed it being performed by Mr. Beck who has wonderful reading skills and voice inflection. This is worth listening to during a long car trip.

Different than Grisham's other books

I thought this one was a real page turner, as I was really curious to find out what would happen to a lawyer who gives up a big salary so he can pursue a more noble type of job. I thought this book was interesting and shed some light on what it is like to be in the midst of a homelessness situation and how hard it is to help homeless and addicted people.
