Must Buy

I learned so much from this book. However, I recommend reading Creating Web Pages for Dummies first because it really does the basics. But, this book will be great by itself.

a REFERENCE for the rest of us.

They really live up to that subtitle in this one. Chapter 6 is a reference. This is however what I needed, because I already had written some html code, but was unhappy with the code the tools were creating. Remember, YOU DO NOT NEED A BOOK TO LEARN HTML! However, a book can help you improve the your html code. If you do need a book to learn html, then your going to have much larger problems because html is the tip of the iceburg, it's what the user sees and uses to communicate with the CGI script running on the server. May all the gods help you if you need more hand holding then any HTML book would provide. You could print the reference from the web, but, that will not look as pretty on the shelf. I'm a programmer for FamilyHomeSearch.com, and use the book as a reference to make the generated html code from Microsoft Front Page 2000, more efficient.

Great for ideas

A great book for beginners, lots of ideas & samples. I learned so much from this, it would be easier to do a new page than make additions to the exsisting one.

Too basic & not enough information covered

This book is great for beginners who are only interested in perhaps creating a web page (rather than a web site) about themselves. Furthermore, it does not go into enough detail on some topics. For example, it teaches how to create forms on one's web site, but does not go into enough detail on CGI and the programming behind it, making the section on forms practically useless unless you also buy their book "CGI for Dummies." It does, however, cover the basics of text formatting and adding images to one's page, but it does not go into enough detail as to how to add sounds, video, and other media such as Shockwave or Flash. However, it covers frames and the FRAMESET and FRAME tags very well, but again, there is not one mention of inline frames (the IFRAME tag). If you are looking for a basic HTML guide, this is what you need, but be careful not to get confused by the miscellaneous stuff they don't explain enough. I recommend this book to those perhaps making a personal web page.

Mixed Emotions about this book.

HTML is an easy language to learn. Unfortunately, this particular dummies' book was inconsistent in teaching the concepts within it. I had difficulty with the graphics chapter. The CD provided PaintShop Pro 4. It was difficult to use. It didn't respond to the commands given in the book. I wound up going to the JASC website and downloading the latest version (PaintShop Pro6). The book was poorly edited, as well. I don't mind the humor within in the chapters of the book, but dislike seeing it in the quizes and tests. It causes confusion. I managed to learn how to create a basic web page, but I feel that HTML should be an easy language to learn. This book made it appear to be more difficult than it is.
