... and Indians

The book was a quick read. If it is for children, it should only be read by older children who can understand the complexities of Cynthia Ann's life and times. I have loaned this book to several friends who were surprised by how different this view of the Old West was from the Westerns they grew up watching.

The Blast-from -the-past!

If you are interested in a fast-paced, blast-from-the-past, Carolyn Meyers' novel, Where the Broken Heart Still Beats is the book for you.

In this fact-filled novel about the kidnapping of Cynthia Ann, who was born at Fort Parker and raised with the Comanche tribe, you will learn amazing facts from 1836-1845.

I highly recommend this novel for children within the age of 12-15 or adults of any age, due to the length, genre and vocabulary.

One thing I absolutely love about this book is the way in which Meyer organizes the novel and the fast-paced action.

For Example:
"Then the Indians charge into the fort, pouring through the open gate. A few of them roughly seize her cousin Rachel, who clutches her baby, James, in her arms. Silas is suddenly galvanized into action and rushes to help the shrieking, struggling Rachel. Moments later, Silas lies dead and Rachel and the baby are being dragged away."

So if you like fun, historical-fiction, Where the Broken Heart Still Beats is the book to read!

Where the broken heart still beats: the strong, proud voice of the Comanche People and the harsh realities of frontier life.

A moving YA novel that tells the sad tale of Cynthia Ann Parker, a Texan who was abducted by the Comanche tribe as an nine-year-old in 1836. The Comanches killed her father, mother, uncle and younger siblings in a raid on Fort Parker, and abducted Cynthia and her little brother John as slaves. 25 years later, Cynthia, now Naduah, is happily married to a Comanche chief, Pete Nacoma, and is the mother of of a young daughter, Topsannah, and two fine braves, Quanah and Pecos, when she is recaptured by the Texas Rangers and sent to live with her surviving family.

Naduah's story is told from the dual viewpoints of her own narrative (written in third person), and her cousin Lucy's diary, told in first person. These two women, one a strong chief's wife, gifted in the ways of the Comanche, who seeks nothing more than to escape to rejoin her tribe and (Comanche) family, and the blossoming young cousin, twelve when Naduah first arrives, who is the only one in the family to make an effort to understand Cynthia Ann's experiences with the Comanche as positive. Naduah is constantly scrutinized by the women of the family, moved from household to household as her "heathen, savage" ways and escape attempts become too much to bear.

A touching, melancholy tale based on fact and full of Comanche life and language, Texan frontier culture in the 1800s, along with a commentary on the Civil War, this will appeal to young readers who enjoy historical frontier fiction such as "Little House on the Prairie" and Native American novels such as "Sweetgrass," "Sing Down The Moon," and "Primrose Way." The novel does contain several graphic, violent scenes, so I would not recommend this for younger readers.

book review

After we read where the broken heart still beats by Carolyn Meyer I could understand why Cynthia Ann wanted to go back with her people. I could also see why Meyer wrote this book.
Cynthia Ann thought she was a Comanche because she was captured by them when she was 9-years-old. Her family captured her 25 years later and took her in to comfort her. She didn't take to her real life that much.
I could see why she wanted to go back to her people. She lived most of her life with the comanches so she doesn't know that much about her old life. She made a family in her other life so she really really wants to go back.
You should read this book if you want an adventure. This book is really interesting and worth it if you want to read it. I recommend this book you people in middle school. Also to people that are older than 13.

When Forcing Becomes A Problem

In the book Where the Broken Heart Beats by Carolyn Mayer, the book brings out a lot of interesting points. In the first part of the book, Lucy begins to talk about her cousin Cynthia-Ann.
First she explains how Cynthia-Ann became an Indian, then she told more about Cynthia-Ann and how she reacted to the situation. Lucy and her family were denying the fact that that Cynthia-Ann was their cousin only because of their skin color, and how it contrasted. Then Lucy tries to teach Cynthia-Ann English, then she sees that Cynthia-Ann is reluctant, and why.
When I was little, my parents always told me that I should not try to force someone to do something. If I did force someone to do something, then they would hate it and never try to do it. So I never tried to force someone to do anything.
After reading the book, it impressed on me more that I should try to put myself in someone else's shoes. If I do that then I will be able to understand why someone feels a certain way.
