The best desk size dictionary
There are other longer and more learned reviews, but I will just save you some time and research. If you want something more then a pocket version, this is easily the best mid-size
dictionary
. It's clear to read and comprehensive. As many words in both
Russian
and
English
have multiple slightly different meanings, the plentiful phrase usage examples are especially useful.
Still the leader among the dictionaries currently available on the market
This
dictionary
by Kenneth Katzner has become a classic. It contains two sections: the
English
-
Russian
part and
Russian-English
part, with each half being a cross-reference mirror of its the other. The organization of entries is intuitive and words are easy to find. When a word can have more than one contextual meaning, those are listed separately under the same entry and clearly labeled. E.g. under the entry "discharge" there are several subentries with different meanings of this word: 1. unload 2. release 3. dismiss from a job 4. pay off, as debt, etc, each with its own correct equivalent in Russian.
The binding quality of the paperback edition that I own has been very good. Other readers have remarked on the poor binding quality of the hardback version (which is somewhat surprising).
The strongest point of Katzner's dictionary is the quality of its content. The precision of translations, and the up-to-date choice of words, are unparalleled. In my ten years of using this book, I have been able to find only maybe two or three sloppily or incorrectly translated entries. None of the current Russian- or British-based dictionaries can rival this linguistic craftsmanship. If I wanted to go nit-picking, I could argue that the word "poganka" is really better translated as the "deadly amanita" rather than the "toadstool" (the translation offered by the dictionary), but such technicalities aside, I am yet to find a better and clearer compiled dictionary, particularly for American based speakers. The next edition is long overdue, but for now this book remains the leader in its class.

A bi-lingual must
This book is excellent. Whether you are a student or teacher of
Russian
or
English
. An excellent source.
Beginning student of Russian language user's comments
Very comprehensive vocabulary but very limited slang content. The
dictionary
provides many examples of how the words are used in different contexts. I used this dictionary in Russia to communicate with limited-
English
-speaking friends. Communication was not fluent but it was effective. This is my fifth copy of the dictionary. My
Russian
friends also enjoyed using this dictionary and I gave away the first four copies. One copy was given to a teacher of English (the lovely Elena Andreevna) for use at her School No. 2 in Shchuch'ye, Russia. She said it was the only dictionary of this type that she had based on American (not British) English.

Very Good
I'm in the process of learning
Russian
so that I can share her native language with my Russian born girlfriend. As a language expert, she rated this
dictionary
as Very Good, though not excellent, as she found a few errors and identified some types of words the editors chose to leave out which she wished they'd included. I'm still looking to get my hands on the Penguin Russian Dictionary, as it's said to be the best, but at the going price, I'll have to wait.
