reads like a suspense novel!
I just finished reading this mesmerizing
story
at 3am this morning. I couldn't put it down!
Scott Zesch stumbles (literally)across the grave of a little-talked-about ancestor (Adolph Korn), who was
captured
by the
Indians
in his youth and then ransomed by his family. Since little information is known about this man, Uncle Adolph, Scott decides to investigate.
The result is one of the most fascinating stories I have ever read. The captured children's tale fascinated me as a sociology major: the cycle of kidnapping, identifying with and becoming "more Indian" than the Indians seemed like it was taken right out of the textbooks.
The cultural difference between European-American and Native -American values was never explained better or articulated more clearly than in this riveting book, which takes a deep look at two different peoples. Each culture is examined on its values from an objective eye - The Indians weren't cruel by their standards. Their way of life was borne of necessity and a harsh reality. It was something the white man could never comprehend.
What made the book more personal and easier to identify with is that all of those things happened right here in my backyard (so to speak), in
Texas
. I know and have been to some of the places the author mentions in his book, and the streets of Fort worth, Dallas and area counties are all named after people who are mentioned in this story.
Regardless of your familiarity with the geography of the plains, or your knowledge of Texas history, this book is a must read.
Scott Zesch is such a gifted story teller, I bet he could write a fascinating story about the sleep habits of the Mediterranian fruit fly!

Extraodinary
This book was indescribably good. I couldn't stop myself from reading it non-stop cover to cover.
Don't wait-read it today
This book was truly amazing. I do realize that in some instances Scott Zesch had to rely on family stories or hearsay, but I appreciate that he presented the book and the facts as truly as could be expected given the circumstances. He didn't leave me wondering-how did he come up with that? or that too many of his claims were unsubstantiated. At the end of the book he describes the perimeters or guidelines he used when incorporating personal narratives, etc. into the
story
. He was able to incorporate a lot of facts into the story, but to keep it so it read like a novel. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with any interest in the history of the New World.

NOT A BAD READ
This young man built a heart warming
story
out of facts. People that were involved with this man's relation has stated
true
events. Today, in modern society we are faced with various stories of how young boys are stolen and later found brainwashed against their parents etc. No differance then than now, just different in times and surrondings.
Very Good Read
Very interest information, well written. Highly recommended for the western hi
story
buff.
