Continuing the saga of the last man on Earth

Cycles, the second volume of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's Y: The Last Man, continues the adventures of young escape artist Yorick Brown and his pet helper monkey Ampersand. Both are the only male mammals left on Earth after a mysterious plauge wiped out every living organism with a Y-chromosome, and along with Dr. Mann and the mysterious Agent 355, are beginning a cross country trek to find out what happened. After being literally kicked off a train, Yorick finds himself under the care of a pretty young woman in the mysterious town of Marrisville, and soon after Yorick and co. find themselves caught between the residents of the town (who all share dark pasts) and the gang of Amazon women who want Yorick dead of which Yorick's sister Hero is a member of. Despite the fantastical backdrop of the series, Cycles is shockingly realistic and almost surreal, and thanks to Vaughan's writing, it comes off as something really special. The art of Pia Guerra and Jose Marzan, Jr. is just as great as it was with the previous volume Unmanned, and the few action scenes are nicely orchestrated and drawn. Those new to the series will be salivating by the time they reach the last page of this collection, and the following volume, fittingly titled One Small Step, solidifies Y: The Last Man as another compulsively addictive Vertigo classic. All in all, if you've never read Y: The Last Man, now has never been a better time to meet up with the last man on Earth.

Incredible series

This comic series is a brillant, fun, mind-bending, though-provoking series unlike anything I've ever seen or read before in any medium. The visual story telling of the comic medium is absolutely perfect for this story. The multiple story arcs are fascinating.

If you're not reading this series already, run, don't walk to the store or the Amazon checkout page to start this series. You WILL NOT be disappointed. I've read the books cover to cover twice since getting them a month ago, and have already read the comics (that I pick up every month like clockwork) start to finish no less than 5 times.

Great great stuff.

5 stars! great reading and art!

this is a great graphic novel, one worth owning and reading many times over. if you have glimpsed the first of this series then you know what your getting into yourself into. Don't miss this if you have any interest in comics or graphic novels =)

The plot thickens.

Brian K. Vaughan, Y: The Last Man: Cycles (DC, 2003)

Vaughan's Y: The Last Man saga continues with Cycles, the second book in the series (which is so far at five). The plot thickens, and we get a closer look at Vaughan's ideas of what a post-apocalyptic America looks like.

The main problem with the book is that some of what we came to consider major characters in the first book don't get nearly enough screen time (Alter and her crew); that said, what's here is certainly intriguing enough. Yorick, Ampersand, 355, and the Doc have to get to California by rail. That, of course, will be less than easy. This book (and, I assume, at least the next two) cover their adventures during that journey, both with the new people they meet and some old adversaries.

Y: The Last Man is turning into something very good. Check it out. *** ½

The Plot Barely Thickens

I missed all the hype about this series, and just happened upon the trade paperbacks at the library. So far, it's good, very solid storytelling and art that grabs you, but is perhaps not quite as amazing as the many gushing reviews I've since read make it out to be. The premise, as the title says, is that some kind of plague spontaneously kills every male on earth at the same instant -- except a 20something slacker named Yorick and his monkey Ampersand. Following the events of the first book, we pick up the story of Yorick, his government agent bodyguard (Agent 355), and the geneticist who might be able to solve save humanity, as they try to make it cross-country from Boston to San Francisco.

The Amazon death squad (which melodramatically includes Yorick's sister) is still hot on his trail, and the mysterious Israeli army officer from the first book is also in hot pursuit. The bulk of the story takes place in Marrisville, Ohio, after the trio is forced to jump off a train. This is an apparently idyllic small town leaving in peace and seclusion compared to the big cities seen in the first book. Of course, the town of 67 women has a dark secret, and when it's revealed it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. And when Yorrick is let in on the secret, he inexplicably flies off the handle about it in a jarring scene that comes out of nowhere. It's a major misstep by the authors, and one that has no storytelling purpose whatsoever. This volume climaxes in a showdown between the heroes and their Amazonian pursuers, and the meeting between Yorick and his sister is handled well.

However, the most intriguing part of the story is a very minor person who makes only two appearances in the background of the story, but has some earthshaking information that no one seems to listen to. this leads to a great full-page reveal on the last page of the book, whetting the appetite for more. As in the first book, there's some nice humor and the artwork is adequate. Since the cross-genre premise has been established in the first book, this volume is a little less interesting, as it consists of little more than the heroes geographical advancement and a few other background plot points. But I'll certainly keep reading to see what happens in volume three.
