An Authentic Modern Concert Performance
This is probably the best seller (# 4xx) in the Amazon list of
Handel
's
Messiah
and it's origins in the catalog date back to 1979 on LP. The soloists are first-rate and the conductor is a choral scholar, having studied at King's College (Cambridge). The recording is clear and balanced
and the tempos are correct.
The only knock on this one is it is missing # 34-37 which for most people is not a big deal.
P.S. If you're learning Messiah and want to sing along, the easiest recording is the classic Philadelphia
Orchestra
/Mormon Tabernacle Choir/Ormandy recording, an all time best seller with some slower tempos and incredible diction allowing you to hear the words you're supposed to be singing! The soloists have the proper energy and fullness. The recording is not as clear as above, but for the time it is very good. Although Handel might not like it, I was raised on this one and a recent rehearing was a pleasure.**** stars
P.S.S. There are one or two new recordings that merit a listen, but I haven't heard them as of yet. They would be out within the last 2 years and no doubt cost more than the above recommendations. Guess that is my next task. I also have not made up my mind on which period instrument version I like the best. Sorry, but I review them when I'm ready and I really felt the older recordings should be revisited this year.

Mammoth
The CD is better than "awesome" and the info. gives a heads up about the fact that it contains most of the material than previously recorded records. I have spent five years trying to get this CD and it was worth the wait!!! MP
A Magnificent Recording of the Messiah
This recording of the
Messiah
is the best I have ever heard. The soloists are all excellent. The tenor, Philip Langridge, especially cannot be surpassed. The
London
Philharmonic
Orchestra
and Choir also do a very admirable job performing this musical masterpiece. Buy this CD now. You will not regret it!
Great Music About JESUS

Enjoyable Chorus, Soloists, & Orchestra
I have this version of the
Messiah
on 3 lps of vinyl from the late 1970s as well as the RCA Soria circa 1959 directed by Beechham-- same choir and
orchestra
, different players of course, almost 30 years removed. My RCA Soria came on 4 lps and is a very collectable part of the 1st edition limited release of 1000. Amazon also has the 1959 Beecham for sale, about twice the $.
These two recordings prove that there is more than one way around the mountain. It is interesting to compare the road this music has gone down since 1959. I also have the Smithsoanian Messiah early 1980s on lp with period instruments. The back to nature movement is amusing when it comes to the Messiah. Period instruments? Read the history, almost from the start they were putting on over the top performances with choirs numbering sometimes well over 1,000. These performances would have made Cecil B envious. Whether it is sung by Pavorati or using lutes and harpsicords, the bottom line is making enjoyable music. We are centuries removed from the Baroque era and we are not getting any nearer, even with "period instruments." Pinch me if I am wrong, but for those of us who have gone to a "Renaissance Pleasure Fair," did we really enter the 1600s?
Both Beecham and Alldis succeed in making very enjoyable music. It is ok to listen to different takes on this music!
Please do not miss the reason for the season! You will hear much of God's good news to us and the hope that it inspires in the Messiah. We were created in God's image with the purpose of enjoying His presence in intimate fellowship for all eternity (read John chapter 17).
Handel
's Messiah tells the true story of our Redeemer and our redemption. True love is very costly!
