Luther was right about music...Great Classical Guitarist Plays Great Classical Composers What is wonderful here is that a dedicated Christian classical guitarist plays the lute music of one (if not the tops) of Christian composers, Bach.
His rendition of my favorite song (Sheep May Safely Grace) is wonderful. Accompanying notes describe careful craft of transcripting such ominous works as Bach for guitar, and the work here uses those of Segoia, Foster and John Williams, as well as Parkening's own.
This is tranquil and captivating music. Nothing as clear and crisp as great classical guitar. Parkening is at the top of his art here. Having seen him a number of times with the Detroit Symphony, he is truly a diamond of a follower to the likes of Segovia.
Must have to one's collection.
Parkening's playing is so perfectly suited to these pieces. He makes devilishly difficult pieces sound effortless and sublime. His control and artistry are supreme. Sometimes Parkening's playing, on a few tracks on OTHER recordings, seems a little over-the-top. Not here. He seems to be restrained by the spirit of JSB and plays these pieces so sensatively without getting too loose. Wonderful stuff.
