A Classical Music Lover's First Choice!

This is an astounding collection! As a choral singer, I'm familiar with and love many of the classic pieces on this CD, and I've never heard them done better! As a Christmas music and classical music lover, I'm delighted by the inspired creativity and imagination shown by selecting these particular pieces. I never would have thought to put them together in one CD, but they work so well together! This is pretty much the very best Christmas CD I've ever heard.

Robert Shaw was a genius at getting exactly the sound he wanted from his groups. Although I've sung and heard sung Randall Thompson's Alleleuia many times before, I've never heard it done with such sensitivity and emotion before. I was stunned by the prayerful, pleading, exultant performance of this piece, and it brought tears to my eyes. O Magnum Mysterium also was done with powerful emotion, reminding me once again how music can touch our hearts and souls.

I wish I could give this recording SIX stars.

Fabulous!

This CD is truly the best musical composition that I've ever heard. Money well spent. Reminds me of past Christmas's and those to come, full of love, happiness and wonder.

This album defines Christmas at our house

This CD is always the first to get popped into the CD player come the "season of chaos" every year, and truly gets me into the Christmas spirit (of giving and celebrating, not of shopping) with its melodius and meditative takes on a variety of compositions. From the opening bells of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" you too will be pulled into an enveloping experience that overwhelms the senses and pulls at your emotions.

Personal favorites are the Biebl "Ave Maria" with its lush males-only sub-group, (Northwest-native) Morton Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" weaving in and out of beautiful dissonance, and the haunting traditional melody "Carol of the Birds" with a beautiful soprano solo and some spectacular singing by the men.

My only gripe with the album is that the overall volume level is very quiet, and thus does not work well on random with other CDs. Small price to pay, though...

Shaw's rhythmic interest wins!

I have personally prepared many of the selections on this album. I chose this album over others because Shaw's use of forward motion through rhythmic interest is unbeatable. There is never a "dead" spot. His singers have a beautiful tone combined with wonderful energy! I would love to see (hear) Donald Neuen record The Ceremony of Carols!
