A Ton of Fun!
This recording literally overflows with enthusiasm both for the music itself and for the process of rendering that music. Andrew
Manze
and Rachel
Podger
are both impeccable, playing each other off wonderfully in the
Double
Concerto (D minor). The recording, while very, VERY close, nonetheless allows the listener to "see" both
solo
ists (Manze is on the left, Podger on the right). The
Concertos
in A Minor and E Major for
violin
are both incredible, with Andrew Manze fearlessly sawing away with a boldness that is almost shocking at times, especially in the final Allegro Assai of the A minor. This disc includes a rendering of the Concerto in D minor for Two Violins (BWV 1060) that has come to us in a different form, as the Concerto for Oboe and Violin in C minor. Manze explains the rationale behind his "return" of the C minor Concerto to its original form, as a double concerto for two violins, in the detailed liner notes that accompany the CD. The Academy of Ancient Music plays with equal grace and fire throughout, an excellent accompaniment to the two wonderful soloists here. This disc earned the top recommendation from "The Rough Guide to Classical Music." True, as one other reviewer has put it, "
Bach
purists may be irked," but arguments aside, for the sheer joy of this music, this CD is not to be missed!

A wonderfully fresh approach to Bach
There is one thing about Andrew
Manze
that few will argue over: the listener will not be indifferent to his approach - you'll either love it or hate it. The previous mixed reviews of this recording certainly attest to this.
I grew up listening to the traditional recordings: Stern, Grumiaux and Oistrakh. The nobility and aural beauty of them will always resonate with me. Manze's interpretation is a horse of an entirely different color: WOW! It represents an exhilarating romp in the park that completely reinvigorates the genre. This is the most "fun" recording of these concerti I've ever heard.
The only thing preventing a 5-star recommendation is the over-closeness of the
solo
ists (the same problem that mars much of Perlman's recorded output) and the inferior quality of the recording. Regardless, it belongs in every Baroque enthusiast's library.

Lack Luster Sound and Direction
Yes, Andrew
Manze
is a wonderful
Violin
player,but I Think his
Direction is not up to par on this recording.First the
Double
Cocerto bwv 104 by
Bach
is my favorite. On this recording there is no chemistry between Manze and Rachel
Podger
,the Bottom is dull sounding and he does not move the Rhythm foward into crisp
moving downbeats that make you tap your foot and get involved.
This original instrument recording is dull but clean. You must raise your volume high in order to get any music sounstage from it and despite the excellent playing, ultimately does not move me.
But by all means at this discount price it is worth a listen and it might suit your personal taste.I will stay with my Pearlman
Zukerman recording of the Double.Yes, Its not a great sounding recording but it is exciting with plenty of good chemistry and a decent job done by Barenboim as Director.
