Powerful Chopin, exceptional mazurkas

This is a great recording. Argerich plays Chopin in a strong, fresh and powerful way. Only comment I have is that I feel that sometimes her tempi are (a bit) too fast, especially in the nocturne. The recording sound is not that great, but acceptable.
For me the highlights on this disc are without doubt the mazurkas. I feel this is THE way the mazurkas should be played, free, like an improvisation, but with a very specific, Polish rhythm. The mazurkas alone are absolutely reason enough to buy this disc right away. And what a beautiful pieces these mazurkas are! I feel that these pieces stand for the essence of Chopin's art: classical in form, revolutionary harmonics, an improvisational character and beautiful belcanto melodies.
In short: don't hesitate, buy this disc right away!

Buy for the third sonata

Buy this disc for the third sonata. Its chopin's best, and she owns it so hard. Her playing of the last movement puts anyone else's to shame, playing the finale with ridiculous speed and most of all, in rhythm. I hate when i hear that ending slowed down, and softened, it sounds like garbage like that. She is unreal.

Outstanding

This is one of those CDs that, on first listen, I knew I'd be pulling off the shelf repeatedly over the years. The playing on the B Minor Sonata is stirring. Technically superb, of course, but that's a given. The intangible is the emotional impact of the music which is considerable.

At times, the coloring is more impressionistic than romantic. No matter, because the entire program is passionately and beautifully played. (OK, the A Flat Polonaise may be a bit over the top).

Music making of the highest order.

don't miss this!

I would buy this just for the 1st and last recordings and you get even more than that. So Horowitz is close to perfect. But what about her? Pure talent!! This recording was withheld for many years due to competing recording company contracts. You would be doing yourself a favor for buying this CD.

Not Argerich at her best, but still very impressive.

Argerich's playing is nothing short of miraculous. It's as if God's most precious gifts had been all bestowed upon her - she makes other pianists pale in comparison. This record is no exception, even though it's not Argerich at her best. At times her playing here is too straightforward, too agressive, yes, even too intimidating, and I don't know if she's really being faifhtul to Chopin's music. It sounds as if she's intent on shunning people away from playing the piano and effacing every other interpretation from the face of the earth. It just doesn't fit Chopin's music all that well, but it's still worth buying and listening to thousands of times.
