A faithul and credible rendition. Bravo!

In my youth I had the pleasure of singing in a Catholic Boychoir that was was professional enough to sing in Carnagie Hall and under Leonard Bernstein in Lincolm Center in N.Y.C.
We had years of practice and instruction in gregorian chant as well as traditional Catholic sacred music and this religious musical experience even surpassed my music expereiences during the 4 years in a Catholic seminary. In short, I feel qualifed to render an opinion on this CD. It's first rate in its arrangements, content and in the utilization of a boychoir.

Magnificent!!! Beautiful worship music!

My little baby even has a favourite! Every time I play no.6 "Oh Sanctissimo", he kicks around in my womb like crazy! I believe it's the lovely high voices and stringed instraments.

This is a FABULOUS cd, a real MUST HAVE for any convert to Catholicism who needs to get a taste for traditional Catholic hymns and prayers. Each song is the most wonderful prayer, so very moving! A lot about the Eucharist. This is also a great aid in helping one learn Latin I must say, especially with the Latin and English words to each song/prayer written out for you, and the words of the songs so well articulated. There's even a little write up about where each song/prayer originated and who wrote the music.

I feel very clever indeed being able to distinguish between an Ave Maria by Bach and an Ave Maria by Schubert! :-) HaHaHa

Beautiful Catholic Hymns

Of all the cd's I've bought looking for the beautiful music from the Masses of long ago, this one captures the reverence and beauty most closely. It is extremely medatitive. A must buy if you are looking to recall the Catholic Mass in Latin.

if you remember the latin mass, and the sometimes inspired high masses of the pre vatican II era, this is for you. an inspired collection of hymns, most are featured in the St Gregrory hymnal. well arranged, with excellent singing and conducting. buy it!

GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS

OK, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that this recording is a welcome addition to any collection. The selections are classical Catholic hymns and melodies, rarely heard in churches now, and steeped in tradition. The Ave Maria by Bach and the one by Schubert are often heard at weddings. The Panis Angelicus is done with taste, with no dramatic effect. The singing by the Cathedral Singers of Chicago is up to par, not exceptional, but of good quality. The accompaniment is strange. I could not detect the sound of the organ, although the notes say there is one.

Now the bad news. (Has anyone ever read the encyclical on sacred music by Pope Pius XII?) It seems to me that the Catholic Church has lost all sense of sacred music. An obscure Jesuit from the backlands of Maine writes a new song and bingo, everyone wants to sing it. Christians have such a treasury of music but they hardly use it. Another point: this CD perpetuates the wrong idea that church music is to be listened to and not sung along. Catholics have lost the art of congregational singing, if ever they had it. Is this an attempt at correcting that?

I hope the next Pope will restore sacred music and insist that local churches listen. (I have left the RC Church by the way, and the main reason was music.)
