Birth Order Book

I am a middle child, and the description of my siblings, their roles in the family, and my own temperament and style were spot-on. I sent a copy to my married son and wife. I look at my friends and their siblings now and I can see the source of both contention and happiness in their family constellations.

Very Informative

I bought this book because I've been told that birth order is important to the study of psychology. I found this book informative on birth order as well as tips for general life. Kevin uses birth order as a means of understanding strengths and weakness in every day life and how to overcome some of the obstacles birth order presents in everyday life. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

wow - now I know why I am this way!

This is a book I read for a book club - it is probably one of the best books ever - I run around quoting from it all the time now. I really answers a lot of questions about why we are the way we are. Also helps with how we treat our children. Again amazing.

Interesting but not exhaustive

Kevin Leman writes a very general introduction to the psychology of birth order and how it affects personality. He is very careful when making generalizations to state that they are only generalizations, trends, predictions.

When I read psychology books, I tend to immediately analyze myself, my family, and my friends. I tried to keep from doing that as I read this book and regard it as an informative read. To some extent I kept from over-analyzing, but I did realize some valuable things about some of my friends and family, and especially some people I don't get along with at all.

This is not an exhaustive work. I can't stress that enough. It's very informal and personal and understandable. If I ever decide I want more information about birth order, I know to research some other books. But this book is "fun", so it's a great introduction.

I used to hear people talk about "birth order" all the time and I didn't know what it meant. People would say "Are you the oldest child in your family?" and I would say "yes" and they would say "ahh..." wisely and nod their heads as if to say "Well, that explains it." Hah. Well, now I know.

I agree that this book could go more in depth, but I also found Kevin's multimedia DVD version he produced with Sampson Resources, and it contained a ton more information.

I think this book is a great place to start if you know nothing about birth order. Everyone I have given it to has loved it. And if you are like me and need more info, then find the DVD version.
