An encyclopedic work on a fascinating subject...
D-
Day
was a monumental undertaking, involving troops from several countries. It is, frankly, a day that changed world history.
The book goes through not just the Allied perspective, but the German perspective as well.
For those who have read other Ambrose books, you'll notice some repeated information, for instance it will cover material from "Band of Brothers" and "Citizen Soldier".
Overall, this is a fascinating look at the events of the day, from Eisenhower on down. From the rangers at point du hoc to the glider pilots, etc.
A great book for people fascinated with military history.

One of Ambrose's best works.
I recently finished Band of Brothers and was amazed and how great a writer Ambrose was. So I ordered D-
Day
, Citizen Soldiers and The Victors. I'm roughly half-way through
D-Day
and can already say that it is one of the best books I've ever read. I work on second shift and get off work at 11:30 PM. I go home and start reading and can't put this book down. The next thing I know I look at the clock and it's 3 or 4 in the morning, and I can't believe the time went by so fast. Ambrose was a brilliant military historian. His descriptions of everything is so detailed. If you've watched Band of Brothers on TV you owe it to yourself to check out some of Ambrose's other works. I know you'll love them.

BREATHTAKING!
Absolutely breathtaking! This is simply the finest book I have read to date on
WWII
. Ambrose writes history like it was your own grandfathers story! Must read for every american.
Good account of the US involvement at D-Day
Several others sum up my feelings on this book, so I will keep it brief.
Enjoyed the structure and writing. The use of oral histories was interesting.
However, the belittlement of all other forces apart from the US was deeply annoying and sad. The author's idolization of Eisenhower was to the detrement of Montgomery in this account, and did not allow for an unbiased description of the leadership invovled in the campaign.
If I were a non-US fighting member of the AEF that
day
, I would find this account insulting, to say the least.
A simple caveat in the title stating the account to be of the US involvement that day and the dropping of the chapters involving the non-US beaches OR a complete, non biased historical account would have made this book one of the leading accounts of that day. Instead it is an intereting jingoistic account as it stands.
