The best available book on hidden history

I have read a lot of books on power and conspiacy theories, and this one is the best one I have ever read. Unlike some of the more wild-eyed conspiracy writers, Marrs is cool, clear, extremely detailed (without being mind-numbing), and he lets you know when a given topic has less than sufficient evidence to really be convincing.

However, Marrs section on the Knights Templar and the Crusades is very poorly done and completely inacurate because he relies totally on the recent revisionist historians such as Baigent, Leigh, Knight, Lomas, and especially Gardner. These are writers of fiction who have attempted to pawn off their poorly supported and unbelieveable theories on Mary Magdalene and the Holy Grail as fact. Dan Brown's "DaVinci Code" relied on these same sources, and with the same gusto stated in the introduction - fact... fact... fact... - all of the facts were lies.

Nevertheless, Marrs has some interesting things to say. Many, probably most Americans, are so steeped in the conventional views of their high school history class that they reject any of this stuff out of hand; they automatically close their minds, because the process of reconsidering their presuppositions is too painful and tiring to even contemplate. However, before you stop reading this review and pass judgment, let me state several incontrovertible facts:

1) Virtually every Secretary of State, Secretary of War/Defence, and many top American leaders since the days of Woodrow Wilson have been members of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

2) Most American presidents candidates from both parties are depressingly similar, and have been so since the days of Woodrow Wilson. The have been exceptions, of course - e.g., Calvin Coolidge, Barry Goldwater, John Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan (and both of the latter were collared and leashed by the establishment). But why do we always tend to get Skull&Bones and CFR types like Bush, Kerry, and Gore from both sides of the aisle? Why do we continually have political newbies like Carter (trilateral globalist), Clinton (Rhodes scholar & CFR), and now Barack Obama who seemingly come out of nowhere and are thrust into prominence by the NY Times, Washington Post, and large gobs of insider cash? Even the most dim-witted among us have noticed that a political elite seems to control both the Republican and Democrat parties, especially on the serious power issues.

3) The Federal Reserve Bank and the Income Tax measures were both passed by self-admitted conspiritorial forces in governemnt (Frank Vanderlip, Paul Warburg, Nelson Aldrich, and people under the influence of the Rockefeller and Morgan banking establishments in the Jekyll Island cabal). Serious insider attempts to control the US government began during the Wilson administration, starting in 1912.

If you agrees that the above three statements are true, and if it makes sense that those in power would seek to perpetuate their power (duh!), then perhaps you will start opening your mind to what Jim Marrs has to say in this book.

If you are looking for a conspiritorial connection that is woven seemlessly throughout history, then you will be disappointed, Marrs subtitle of this book notwithstanding. Reality is always more complex than simple explanations, and power is always in the hands of humans, who make mistakes, develop enemies, and sometimes go off on strange tangents. Nevertheless, just because there is not an unbroken chain of conspiracy throughout history, does not mean that there are not conspiracies at work, in the America of 2007.

Read Marrs book with an open mind. Some parts are pure historical hype and deception (I think Marrs himself was deceived), but some parts are valid.

good read, questionable information

i strongly would recommend this book to anyone new to the whole secret society genre. it does a great job of covering everything historically and the commentaries at the end of each chapter present some interesting opinions. however, my only concern is about the credibility of such information. Marrs loosely throws around the words "researchers say..." or "an renouned writer wrote..." these types of ambiguities raise eye brows about the actual legitimacy of such profound truths. i guess one really has to read these things wih a grain of salt though. despite that, this is a very good book, a quick read, and a gateway book for getting into taboo-esque conspiracy theory literature.

read this book and "treason: the new world order"

This book is one of the best ever written on the subject of the NWO.I only give it four stars because of the "annunaki extraterrestrials" nonsense in the last chapter.
But, if u forget that chapter it is worth 5 stars.

I highly recomend also "treason: the new world order" by Gurudas. The last time i checked this book on amazon the readers comments were no longer there...Buy this one also before all copies are destroyed.

Intuitive and Comprehensive

An excellent overview of secret societies and their historical influence on western civilization. An example of his astute and honest research is his inconclusive view regarding the Priory of Sion story (Magdalene/Merovingian myth). He leans toward it being true but doesn't sell it as gospel truth (forgive the pun). Complementary reads: 'The Christ Conspiracy' and 'Brotherhood of the Sun.'
