An Epic Return

A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES give us our characters back as we expect them to be, larger than life beckoning us on to number seven with impatient expectations. Okay, this one more than lives up to Diana Gabaldon's standard of long books with very fine print. But you hang on, even with a magnifying glass through every word.
Diana is one of the few authors whose descriptions match the little essays of Victor Hugo, who was paid by the inch. You read them, even if they don't advance the storyline. That is the remarkable talent that keeps us waiting for the next installment.

ABOSAA

I love Diana Gabalbon! She paints such a story that you feel your right there with the characters. I wish that all the unabridged audio books in this series were available at Amazon.

Gabaldon

I bought this for my wife. This is her third time through the series. She decided that it is easier to buy them than to continue to check them out at the local library, as she intends to read the series several more times. It must be really good.

Marc's Review

A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHESDiana Gabaldon has created another masterpiece in this series. I hope there are more volumes in the offing!

A Physically Painful Experience

At a thousand pages, (I got the hardcover from the library), I have to say that this book was the most physically painful read since, well, 'The Fiery Cross', *sigh*

I do the majority of reading in bed, and trying to hold this book comfortably for any length of time was just impossible. I found myself cursing Diana page-after-page for making her fans struggle with such a monstrosity.

Unlike 'The Fiery Cross', I liked this latest installment of the story; or should I say the various vignettes that make up this continuing saga. As usual, Diana is the master of exhaustive minutiae, with her writing splendidly evocative, as always.

Like others, I have followed Claire and Jamie with great interest, and have enjoyed the story of their lives and marriage. But I must admit to a more-than-once consideration as to whether I really wanted to turn the page and continue. Did I mention Diana's exhaustive minutiae? *lol*

Alas... the story has just gotten to the point of being ridiculously repetitive. Apart from the physical pain of trying to hold this book in any kind of comfortable position to actually enjoy reading it, the storylines of kidnapping and other relentless crises is beyond-the-beyond. By the end, I found myself physically, mentally, and emotionally spent from peeking into the lives of these two characters, which is nothing but a plethora of non-stop catastrophes, and has become, to my mind, a hydra of endless karmic retribution to rival Job.

Indeed, it is now my contention that these two will never find a moment's peace til they're in the grave. And that will, you can be sure, be a grave built for two. For if nothing else, these two are joined at the hip like no others and, as Diana intimated in this book, will very likely die in each other's arms.

I haven't bought one of Diana's books since 'Voyager' preferring, instead, to borrow from the library. I guess I'm just not as enamoured with the series as I was with the first three books. And having to face these later, thousand-page tomes makes me even less inclined to be so.
