Here's to great new beginnings!! CHEERS

I was optimistic, and I wasn't let down! My only complaint was that the story was too short, I couldn't wait to see what Artemis would be up to next. I would not compare this to Harry Potter. This story stands on its own, with plenty of installments to keep you reading and waiting on the next adventure. Always full of surpises, written very well.

Definitely in my Top Five

Enthralling. Colifer engages you from start to finish. Not only is Artemis Fowl II one of my favorite characters of all time, but he also gives us one of those rare opportunities to have the antagonist as our main character. When both sides are getting down and dirty you start thinking of the whole thing as a free-for-all, but every time you take a step back you realize that Artemis is actually the villain. And Colifer still has you rooting for him all the way. Extremely clever in all respects, with witty dialogue and witty narration, I can hardly even imagine someone putting it down. You couldn't accuse Colifer of unoriginality either, for his high-tech city-dwelling fairies are unique and refreshing. I find Colifer to be amazingly creative. Who would have thought that the "Lep" in Leprechaun (or LEPrecon and Colifer spells it) stood for Lower Elements Police?

In summary, the characters are well-developed and engaging, the plot is fast-paced and intense, and Colifer has stuffed its 304 pages with wit, humor, creativity and cleverness. I don't give five stars lightly, but this book has definitely earned them.

Very entertaining, and great narration by Nathaniel Parker

I enjoyed this first book in a Harry Potter-sortof way. It's good, fun escapism. What I like is how the tempo of the book changes from criminal drama to comedy to fantasy to spy novel, etc, etc... Initially, you aren't really sure what is going on, but eventually the young anti-hero idea catches on and becomes a very entertaining narrative. Nathaniel Parker provides a fantastic narration, reminiscent of Jim Dale's excellent characterization for the Potter audio books.
Having finished the first couple books, I'm led to think of the first two books almost as a continuous story, with many of the same characters recurring.
Worth checking out.

Good fun

When I started reading 'Artemis Fowl' I didn't know what to expect. I had just heard it was a popular series with tweens and young teens, but had heard little beyond that. At first I wasn't too impressed, I found all the LEPrecon stuff a little too cute. But once Artemis sets his scheme in motion with the kidnapping of Holly, the book really picks up steam. In essence, 'Artemis Fowl' is a very good heist story, but one with fairies, trolls, dwarfs and 12 year old criminal masterminds. A lot of fun.
