Solid maxims on leadership

Leadership expert, former preacher and prolific author John C. Maxwell asks readers to savor his chapters on the essential qualities of a leader a little at a time. He suggests reading one chapter a day like you are taking a vitamin, to give the lessons time to sink in with practice. Each of the 21 traits he cites stems from a basic value leaders can use to guide their actions. This follow-up to Maxwell's useful 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a thinner book in every way, though still nicely thoughtful. We recommend it as a source of inspiration for self-growth and reflection.

A must have

This is my first John C. Maxwell book and I just love the way he writes. Simple, yet concise. This book is a must have for anyone trying to develope their leadership skills.

An Extremely Intellectually Beneficial Work

The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader written by John C. Maxwell was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. This book contains several mechanisms and simple procedures to follow that will not only interest you, but give you a large shove in the right direction in becoming a memorable leader. His book gives you tips on developing your leadership skills that have already, personally, shown favorable results in my life. He addresses simple leadership issues and gives you a process to follow in order to have yourself and your followers recognize your abilities.
Each chapter of the book is titled with an important characteristic that one should adopt in order to lead successfully. The chapters go in depth with examples and suggestions on how to improve or develop a certain characteristic or skill. Also, the book contains inspirational quotes pertaining to each topic discussed. This book not only tells you what is required to become a leader but also shows you how to go about it.
This book focuses on ways to improve or develop the characteristics necessary to become an effective leader. If you can enhance yourself by acquiring these characteristics and obtaining the skills and knowledge to put them into practice you will be able to lead without problem. The book suggests many helpful hints in ways to gain confidence in yourself, give your followers a reason to trust and believe you, and so much more. Maxwell breaks down every issue in an easy to understand way so that anybody interested can benefit greatly from this work.
I would suggest this book to anybody interested in improving themselves as not only a leader but an overall person. Many of the suggested characteristics are ones that one would benefit from possessing whether they have strong intentions on becoming a leader or not.

Good, but too broad and shallow

The book is organized into 21 short chapters that follow a useful pattern.

Opening page with quote (usually quoting himself)
Historical tidbit or quip featuring the topic of the chapter
Breakdown of the particular quality in review
-Fleshing it out
-Reflecting on it
-Bringing it home
-Take away

It isn't that the 21 qualities are not essential. It is just that there must be more. Its all too happy, covering only positive character traits that would be present in any perfect human. I see that these are examples to follow, but I need more than just the list. In this regard, the book is too broad for its few words. I could summarize this further; be good. Did that help you? Sure it did.

The book is concise and quite motivating. My position is simply that if you don't know this stuff already to the depth that it is covered, you probably aren't the type to actually worry about such things. On the other hand, if someone tells you to read this book, the world will probably be better if you pay attention to it. You may have a long way to go.
