Great dog!

This is a great little book about India Opal, a preacher's lonely daughter, who adopts a straggly dog. Several months unfold, filled with events that happened only because of Winn-Dixie. Easy, smooth narrative, punctuated with anecdotes, told by various characters.

Friendship of Two

This book is about a girl (Opal) who is in a store. She sees a stray dog making a total mess. The manager said, "Take him to the pound." Opal said, "No he's my dog." The store was called Winn-Dixie.
The author of this book is Kate DiCamillo. The main characters are... Opal, Dad, Gloria Dump, Amanda and Miss Franny Block. Opal's mom moved away a long time ago. Opal lives in a trailer park. Opal lived in Watley, Florida but she moved to Naomi, Florida.

I think Kate is trying to say, "Take what you have and love it." My favorite part is when Opal meets Winn-Dixie. I think everyone can read it. This book is funny and sad. Hope you like it.

Because of Winn Dixie

I watched the movie "Because of Winn Dixie" as well as reading the book. I enjoyed both the book and the movie, and I was happy that the movie's plot did not stray far from the book. However, there were some differences in how the characters are portayed in each. For example, in the movie the landlord plays a much more prominent role; he does not want to allow Opal to keep Winn-Dixie and forces her to post signs around Naomi. Also, in the book, the pound was never called to Opal's house to take Winn-Dixie from her. The pet owner, Otis, is portrayed as quiet and brooding in the movie, while in the book I interpreted his character as a more simple and shy man. While I enjoyed theh book more than the movie, I found the movie to be entertaining as well as it gave a better insight into the area and town where the story of Opal and Winn-Dixie takes place.

Comparisons and Contrasts between the book and the movie

"Because of Winn Dixie" is truely a charming story about a girl and what she learns one summer from having a very special dog. The movie portrays the book pretty acurately for the most part. There were differences in some of the characters though. For example, the movie creates a strong character in Opal's landlord, whereas the book only gives that charater a few sentences to describe him. The movie also interprets the character of the pet store manager, Otis, much differently than the reader would. The movie shows Otis having a comical relationship with the parrot in his store, as they throw rude comments at each other. Also, in the movie the preacher gives Opal a much harder time about keeping Winn Dixie, he even has her make 'lost dog' signs, which does not even occur in the book. Another interesting difference between the book and the movie was that the book says the preacher tells Opal all ten things about her mother one night; the movie has the preacher tell Opal nine things at one time and the tenth a completely different time. Overall these differences were added for dramatic purposes and did not alter the main structure of the story. The movie was also helpful to visualize Winn Dixie and how he smiled. To get all the details and a more personal view of the story it is necessary to read the book, but the movie does not do a bad job at portraying the events of the book. Like all books that are turned into movies it is more beneficial to read the book than watch the movie.
