Feel Good Workout
I had this book for three years and never really read it, but then on the recommendation of my chiropractor six months ago, I picked it up and plowed through it.
Now, I do the mat set nearly every morning for 15 - 20 minutes before I get ready for work. My back pains have nearly vanished, along with the biweekly trips to the chiropractor! And I feel great!
My advice to someone just starting out: be patient! Though I felt better, both physically and mentally, almost immediately, I didn't "see" any changes in my
body
until about three months later. In fact, it was when I went clothes shopping -- the new slacks just fit differently around the hips. Beautiful!
If you're serious about instituting a change that will make you feel better both inside and out, try this book. Like what many of the other reviewers have written, it has fantastic visual metaphors so that you can ensure you're doing the workout correctly and it's paced for beginner onward. However, if you're looking for a quick fix to lose weight, this isn't it.
Pilates
is wholistic--mind and body, and you've got to be committed to it to work.

Easy to Use
This book was recommended to me by my
Pilates
instructor. It is true to Joseph Pilates' teachings. It is very easy to follow with excellent instructions, photographs, and things not to do.

and this book has been very helpful. The step-by-step instructions show how to do moves for beginners (modified) through advanced. It also has great diagrams which creates a visual concept of how I should be working my
body
. I use this book along with my DVD workout so that I can make sure I am doing each exercise correctly. It is a user friendly book for all levels.

I have been doing
Pilates
since I was 12 years old, and this has been a very refreshing and entertaining book...you just need lots of motivation to carry out the exercises. :)
After checking out a lot of books on this topic, I found this to be one of the best
I am avid reader and taught physiology at one time. Most of my exercise takes the form of walking, yoga and some light weight lifting. However, I think
Pilates
makes a nice compliment to these routines. I have also found it useful for avoiding back problems, which has troubled me in the past.
This particular book by Brooke Siler contains clear explanations, useful visualizations and just the right amount of detail to perform each exercise correctly.
I particularly like that this presentation of Pilates can be performed on the mat with no special equipment. It also has exercises for beginner, intermediate and advanced exercises.
This book also contains a full mat routine of 34 exercises and an arm series workout. This is excellent added value material.
Lastly, the book isn't presented with a lot of hype. It encourages a gentle progressive approach.
