A Penny Arcade masterpiece!

"Attack of the Bacon Robots" is probably the most stunning Penny Arcade compilation ever. The visuals are so stunning for the paper. Although I love reading online, "Attack of the Bacon Robots" should definitely be focused on an intense single player experience. "Attack of the Bacon Robots" is exactly what I've been looking for. "Attack of the Bacon Robots" is #1 book of the year for you.

"Robots with needs"

As you've all probably heard by now, there is little to this book that isn't readily available on the Penny-Arcade website. So, why would anyone buy this book? Because a real Penny Arcade fan has to buy this book, it is a moral obligation. The added commentary, the introductions, the manifesto, and the slathering hordes of hungering undead only make it that much sweeter to meet that obligation. After all, they've given us years of free content and I think it's about time we started throwing money back at them, like the exotic dancers they are.

Oh, and a note on the quality of the printing, the book feels like it could stop a shotgun blast, and it's paperback!

A good buy.

I have read all the comics in the archive on their site, but this book is far more interesting as it gives a little bit of background flavor to the oldies, despite the obvious lower art quality of the first strips. Penny-Arcade wasn't built in a day, and it's worth seeing how the strip evolved via "Tycho's" commentary. A must read for Penny-Arcade fans for sure. Most nerd/geek culture enthusiasts would do well to pick it up, too, even if you are not entirely familiar with their strip. Also, this book would be enlightening to Florida based lawyers with an anti-video game agenda - PA has been picking on the "Video games desensitize kids to violence" issue since 1998. Well constructed and bound book with an interesting forward by Bill Amend of Foxtrot fame. 5-stars.

A must have, but somewhat dated.

Gabe's art has changed dramatically over the years, and the comics in this collection make that point emphatically. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the strip is often topical, and as such new readers will not clue in unless they are already "one of us." Even so, the faithful will love this book (as will any nostalgic gamer) and hungrily await future works to build their collections.

THE WEB'S BEST COMIC STRIP

I have to admit to being completely unaware of Penny Arcade until reading this book. I've followed a few web comics sporadically but somehow this one escaped my attention-my loss! This book collects every strip from 1998 through 2000 as the talented pair of creators, writer Jerry Holkins and artist Mike Krahulik, spin the adventures of cartoon versions of themselves Tycho Brahe and Gabe. The strip finds the pair and an ever-growing cast of supporting characters as they address all things "nerdy" (and I say that in the kindest way as I can't think of a better way to say it) including PC and video games, video game store employees, technical support staffs, game patches, game news websites, game delays and demos, Linux, Napster, and, well, just about everything else you can possibly think of. The pair pull no punches as they bash, with the most irreverent humor, game companies and their long-delayed projects, Mac users, Lars Ulrich (and Napster), and quite often themselves for their own, unabashed geekdom. Anyone whose ever played PC and video games with find this an absolute riot but beware, only the most hardcore gamers will get some of the very inside references, which only serves to make the book that much more "cool".

Krahulik has a very polished and clean cartooning style and often the character's facial expressions and body language will speak volumes. The strips have been beautifully reproduced in this volume thanks to the people at Dark Horse comics. But perhaps the best feature of all is the creator commentary by Holkins for EVERY strip in the book. His commentary is often as funny if not funnier than the strips themselves. His brand of self-deprecating humor sheds a lot of insight on the creation of the strip and the subject matter. Even he seems to sometimes be aghast at some of their "real life" adventures as he looks back at these early strips. In addition to all of this, there is also a sketch page section and an introduction by Fox Trot creator Bill Amend. This is a fantastic and funny collection. Kudos to Dark Horse for giving this wonderful web comic the wide exposure it deserves.
