Spears Surprises With Heartfelt Memoir

Like others posting reviews here, I took advantage of Nelson's offer to review this book in exchange for receiving a free copy. What I knew of the Spears family had been gleaned from TMZ and People magazine, so I had a few preconceived notions about what the book - and the people in it - would be like.

I was wrong. Lynn Spears is a mother who doesn't have it all together, and she says so right up front. I had to admire her warning to those who might think hers was a book meant to give advice on parenting. Instead, she reveals herself to be a woman who, while admitting her flaws, also credits anything she's done right to her faith and her good friends. I came away from this fabulous book with a new respect for not only Lynn and her family but for anyone forced to live their lives in the spotlight.

A Mother's Love

I was not sure what I was going to think of this book...I will be honest I had started tuning out Britney stories awhile ago because I just could not see this young woman fall any farther. She broke my heart. And I will also be honest and tell you I had many preconcived notions about the Spears family.

Lynne Spears shatters all of my notions in just the first few chapters. Yes her daughters have had less than stellar repuations, with one being pregnant and having a child, to one having a breakdown of sorts early this year. Of course our first thought is Where is the Mother? Lynne Spears shows you what life was like for the Spears family, through death and divorce, happiness and heartache. The most important thing I learning in this book is that we are all human, we all basically want the same thing. LOVE.

Lynne Spears does not offer excuses or platitudes about her behavior or her families behavior instead she just tells the story of their lives, the good and the bad. She tells you honestly of her regrets and of her bad choices. It is all done in honesty and with heart.

The book is an easy read, I actually read it in one sitting as once I started reading I just could not stop.

You see a mothers heart in this book, a mother who loves her children and has done the best that she knows how. And in the end all that really matters is that she LOVED her children.

Through The Storm by Lynne Spears

First off, this is not a parenting book, but it is a parents book. Let me explain. "Through The Storm" explores the heartaches and triumphs of Lynne Spears and her family, from a mother's perspective.

What struck me most about this book was that it was NOTHING like I expected it to be. Lynne's honesty and transparency throughout made this a refreshing but often heartbreaking story. Any parent whose child has lost their way will relate to this mother's voice. After all, as she points out again and again, she is a mom whose kids make mistakes just like the rest of us, hers just wind up being front page news. Before reading "Through The Storm" I never gave much thought to the things this family went through prior to becoming famous, but Lynne does a great job of giving a behind the scenes look at what it was like to be married to an alcoholic, yet she does so kindly without violating her family's privacy.

I would definately recommend this book, particularly to parents who are struggling with their own kids. While she doesn't offer advice, she does a great job of inviting us into both her struggle and her hope.

Not a tell all and not a parenting book

What drew me to this controversial book was my curiosity.
Who hasn't heard about the recent turmoil in the Spears family and passed judgement?

If ever there was a family under attack it would be the Spears family.
I was curious to read what Lynn's take on her own family would be. Would she see (and confirm) what the general public has seen?

I admit I had also heard the rumor that this was a parenting book.
It most certainly is not a parenting book, nor was it ever supposed to be one according to Lynn.
It's also not a tell-all book.
You won't find any juicy details about any celebrity in this book and Lynn has only the kindest thing to say about her ex son-in-law Kevin Federline.

If you are looking for any new details about Britney's breakdown, you won't find it. While she mentions Britney going "in and out of a British accent" during on account of a harrowing evening with Britney, she doesn't elaborate. Does Britney have bipolar disorder? Did she ever ask Britney why she was speaking like that?

There also won't be any new revelations concerning Jamie Lynn's pregnancy although her account of the day Jamie Lynn told her that she was pregnant was heartfelt and emotional. I felt like I was there in her living room. As a Christian I admire her daughter's firm decision, despite people on her team encouraging her to have an abortion, to choose life. I'm just a little surprised that the reason why was not elaborated upon. Did Jamie Lynn choose to keep her baby because of her Christian faith? Because she wanted a baby? Because she wanted to marry her boyfriend? It's unclear.

While there are many things you won't read in the book, If you've ever been curious about the woman in the photographs with Britney & Jamie Lynn, then this is the book for you.

Lynn chronicles her life and speaks in detail about her childhood, early marriage (and eventual divorce) to Jamie Spears, her relationship with her sister and her regrets about not holding on to her teaching career. Towards the middle of the book she discusses her naive attitude towards the entertainment industry and a few of the regrets she has had along the way. Throughout the book she does speak briefly about her faith, but this is not really a book about her Christian faith, although she identifies herself as having a strong one.

Although I found the first half the book to be an interesting read I felt the last few chapters of the book were disjointed. In these chapters Lynn discusses Britney's breakdown and the birth of her third grandchild. There is nothing in these chapters that hasn't already been revealed in People magazine. It is obvious Lynn is hesitant to discuss her children's personal life and you have to admire that. This book is not an attempt to sell off any remaining bits of privacy the family has. But what is it an attempt to do? After reading the book I'm a little unsure, as I'm sure Lynn was when she wrote it. While I cannot say that I feel I know Lynn Spears anymore after reading her book, I can say that I have more empathy for her. And perhaps that is the point of reading any autobiography?
