Best Beginners Book Bar None!!

This is as close to perfect as it gets. A MUST HAVE for starting out and goes really well with 78 Degrees of Wisdom and Paul Foster Case's book A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages. (Three best books on the market.)

Readable, concise, extremely insightful and keywords perfect for internalizing meanings. NO OTHER BEGINNERS BOOK IS EVEN IN THE BALLPARK!!!

the most level headed and no-nonsense view!

it seems that Joan Bunning wrote this book to really inform the student, rather than just to sell copies as many others have done. She has done an excellent job clarifying card meanings and trying to make the learning process as easy and understandable as possible. A+

Wonderful Book!

The title on the cover of this book reads "A Tarot Book for Beginners" and it is one that I wished I had when I first started reading Tarot! Well laid out and very well written, this book breaks it down into 19 different lessons, starting at the most basic and moving towards more advanced techniques. The exercises that accompany the lessons are among the best I have ever seen, and allow for the development of intuition to become part of your readings. This book uses the Rider-Waite deck to illustrate. Ms. Bunning's extensive keyword charts are unsurpassed in their diversity. There is also a chapter entitled "The Fool's Journey" which uses a fantastic story for getting a better grip on the meanings of the Major Arcana. She also includes an extensive glossary of Tarot Suit Qualities, Suit Pair Meanings, and Court Card Rank Pair Meanings, which I particularly enjoyed. If you're new to Tarot (and even if you're not), I can't recommend this book enough for a thorough understanding of the basic how to's of reading the Tarot.

From a beginner

I am completely new to tarot, and I bought this book and a deck. I really like this book because it is very well organized. It goes through, in pictures and words, the Major and Minor Arcana, and explains the basics about readings. One thing that is a bit off is that the Celtic Cross Spread is mentioned many times, but you need to go to the back of the book to read all about it, and it is the only spread given. However, it does have a highly detailed section about possible interpretations for every card, as well mention card pairs that enforce it. It also makes mention of card reversals (what they are, how to read them, etc), which I understand few books do. Something else to note is that this book is based on the Rider-Waite, so if you are looking at another type of tarot, this book won't be helpful. For a beginner like me, this is a good starting point for reference, and I'd recommend it.

An excellent guide to the tarot

I just bought this and am enjoying both understanding the complexities of the tarot and the various symbologies. Im in no way a psychic or card reader but I have collected various tarot decks over the years. I am more interested in the way symbols represent the subconscious than in interpreting the past, present, future. This book is a great book for beginners, it breaks down the deck in a way that is easy to follow, annotate and understand. The book is divided into pages that describe each card plus sample divinatory meanings.

It provides sample lessons to help the reader understand how to view the cards from different interpretations and then gives scenarios on how to apply these meanings. Section two of the book then provides excersises so you can begin to understand how the tarot can be used. Section 3 provides suggested lessons and finally section 4 is a breakdown of each card by suit.

Excellent guide to understanding the tarot in lay terms.
