To all the Naysayers....
I was given this book as a gift before my first child was born 13 years ago and read it along with all the other parenting books and magazines I had accumulated. I was a new, nervous parent living far away from the help of my mother or sisters, or any close friends to turn to for everyday advice. This is the one book that seemed to ring true for me, and I followed it - it was a Godsend! I now have two well adjusted, bright children who thrived as infants. As a first grade teacher, I continually see the products of over-indulgent parents, and children who by the age of 5-7 still do not have proper sleep habits, and no sense of security that consistency brings. I am not bothered that the 'newest trends' don't support the theories of this book, we have all seen 'new trends' turn out to be dangerous (doctors and nurses at one time even endorsed cigarettes!), or at the very least, ineffectual. And to comment on the arguments against the author's credentials - the only credential necessary to give advice to a parent is having been one yourself!

Every advise book needs to be treated with common sense
I feel I have to write my first review for this book. I have two healthy, happy boys that were "
baby
wise
" babies (the first slept thru the night at 8 weeks, the second by 6 weeks), now I have a baby girl. I had given my copy of Babywise to a friend and went to purchase it again on Amazon, I started to read some of the reviews and was surprised by all the controversy.
I understand the fear that some people might take the advise too far and be completely inflexible about the schedule. But c'mon people use your common sense, if your child is hungry you'll feed him/her, if your child is crying you'll comfort him/her, if you have done all you can for child (i.e. feed, burped, changed) then sometimes babies just cry, perhaps they are just tired.
I think the book outlines a very sensible schedule that again should be taken with common sense. I think my kids are very happy and adjusted. People are amazed at how easy it is to get my kids to sleep and how well they sleep. Even after reading the negative reviews, I still plan to use the Babywise schedule for my daughter. I am not worried about her not thriving (my second son gained 3 pounds in his first month being on the schedule!) I have to point out that I formula feed because I was unable to nurse. Putting my kids on a schedule saved my sanity and made me a happier, more rested, less frazzled mom, which is what all kids need.
