Good read
Believe it or not, this book influenced my decision to go back to school and get a degree in Social Services. I wish it had more pictures of the
people
mentioned in the book.
Entertaining
I thought the book was quite entertaining. The prospect of a subterranean
life
really boggles the mind - especially the way it is described. At times the book kind of drudged on in my opinion, but for the most part I really enjoyed it.
Fascinating
This little book opened my eyes and mind to a whole other little world right under my nose as I traveled the subways of NYC. A fascinating look into the "secret"
life
of fringe societal "outcasts" and nearly invisible community smack dab under the largest community in the USA. Who wouldnt find intrigue and fascination learning of "secret" communities "living" prosperously and free in "secret" underground
tunnels
and caverns of the Manhattan Subways and Public Works infrastructure.
Hats off to the author for having the courage and grit to overcome her personal fears and expose herself to the dangers of the underground for her study, to be able to bring us an account of her experiences and stories. I could hardly put it down, but would have liked to see more photos and maps. I had trouble finding the sites when I undertook a self guided tour of places cited in this book around the upper west side. Finding them would have made the book come even more alive for me.
