A gem that will always sit upon my shelf
I read this book not knowing what lay ahead. All I knew that
Katherine
had been John of Gaunt's long time mistress who bore him four children. But from the first sentence I was hooked. I was taken back to a time that I have so longed to explore-the 1300's and the Plantagenet rule.
As I read, I saw Katherine and her world so clear that it was if I could have been there myself. I felt glad when she was glad. I felt pain when she did. I felt sad when she was sad. I found myself weeping and sobbing. Even days later, after finishing it, I cried as I recalled particular scenarios- i.e- Katherine's fateful pilgrimage where she encountered a hunchback and an anchoress who would help save her soul.
The final hundred or so pages were immensely gripping and although I read this book almost three months after I type this, I can never forget it. Anya Seton's words were like vivid pictures that have been transferred to my memory.
This novel is a true gem and I will never part with it. I have read many, many books and Katherine has to be my number one favorite. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting a history lesson or to lose yourself in a medieval romance unlike any other.

An Old Read!!
I first read this book over 30 years ago. I just ordered it yesterday and can't wait to read it again! I had long forgotten about it but now remember it was one of my favorites! My daughter is all into the show "The Tutors" which is based on the times of King Henry the V111, 15th century and I know she is going to love this book as well so I got her a copy too. This book was first published in the 50's. I remember History was so very accurate and well written you could almost believe you were walking the halls of the castles right along with
Katherine
!! Again I can't wait to get my hands on this book again!!

Katherine
One of the reason historical romantic novels were so popular in their day. Lots of story, and history to enjoy, plus being well written.
A love that lasts for ever!
It is by far the best read, I loved it, it goes to show you that a woman such as
Katherine
could play a vital role in the history of england, and her love afair with a Prince! Her and John of Gaunt's love affair has been immortalised as one of the greatest love affairs of all time!
Engaging and well-written historical fiction...
I just completed this novel last night and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is well written and does a more than adequate job of holding the reader's attention despite the fact that it is a lengthy novel. I was touched by the love story Ms. Seton creates for
Katherine
and John of Gaunt and was impressed that the novel still felt fresh to me, even though it was written in the 1950s.
The one complaint I have is in regard to the ending. I don't want to deny anyone the pleasure of discovering the entire novel for themselves, so I won't give anything away. However, I think I can at least say that I was disappointed in the final scenes that took place between Katherine and John. I was eagerly awaiting the denouement but was left feeling like it fell a little flat.
Regardless, if you are a fan of historical fiction, you will enjoy this book!
