Stunning Carmen

Well, what else can you expect from Maria Callas? She's always great! My favourite Carmen always!

The Callas-Carmen

As a singer myself I have to say that I am sick of this constant, unmusical and tasteless Callas-bashing. Callas' Carmen is her only complete recording of a mezzo-part. At a time when he middle was her greatest forte she was asked by numerous opera-houses to sing Carmen on stage. She always declined such offers, as did Ponselle when she was offered Eboli. (Although she did sing Carmen) Since Carmen doesn't lie high it isn't a problem for Callas, her middle being in fantastic shape in 1964. Her habanera is graceful, yet dangerous and alluring. She's a dark Carmen, not just a skirt-whirling girl. She's as Don José puts it a "she-devil". Callas spoke of this in her interviews with Lord Harewood, she had a lot of insight on the role, the novel and the music. Her segeduilla is charming and absolutely sexy. One cannot help but fall for her. The gypsy-song has wild temperament, imaginative colouring and incredible ardour. The duet with José is softer, more tender but nevertheless demanding. What is most impressive though is the shattering final duet where Callas portrays the annoyed, fredoom-seeking Carmen to perfection. Gedda sounds fascinating and dramatic as Don José and Pretre knows the score like no other. But there are many other great Carmens not to miss: Stevens, de los Angeles, Troyanos, Migenes and Baltsa are only the most prominent names on the list. Have fun listening!

No other Carmen is as enticing, as seductive and as brutally charming! Gedda sounds awesome, his diction is a role-model (Or should be) to other tenors! Love it, it's the best!

Made to sing Carmen

All this controversy about one of the greatest singers that ever lived is really amusing. When I heard her singing this I thought she was made to sing Carmen. This dark, seductive voice is perfect for the sexy gypsy. And Gedda, Giuot and Massard are absolutely amazing in their roles. Pretre conducts with fire, the sound is awesome. In one word: Essential!

Great Carmen

This Carmen is absolutely HOT. And Callas sounds great as a mezzom her middle NEVER wobbled. She is the best Carmen ever. And Gedda is just as fabulous. Ignore the ignorant basher "Senza rancor" is writing one star crap on every Callas-recording. He's a heartless, ignorant basher.
