Once a skeptic, now a believer

This fascinating CD contains nineteen different works of art performed by the Spanish Benedictine monks of Santo Domingo de Silos (I must admit that I do not really know what to call these chants). I remember when this album came out in 1994; I could not imagine that I would like such a thing, so I laughed at it and walked away. Well, I am now very sorry that I did. The chants themselves are soothing, and yet have a mystical fascination that demonstrates why the art form has survived so many centuries.

Even though I started out a skeptic, I ended up loving this CD. If you are interesting in hearing a soothing, and yet captivating sound, then I highly recommend that you get this CD.

The Real Thing

I think it's strange for Amazon's review to say that there is better and more profesional Gregorian chant than this. This is the real thing --actual monks chanting-- and you don't get better than that. I would rather know that I was listening to chants that were compleetly real and athentic than chants that had been adapted to please mainstream audiances.

Soothing

Soothing musical performance and great to have on the sleeper function of your CD player as you drift off into never-never-land. Beautiful singing.

Just One Question

The music is flawless. Haunting, spiritual, engrossing, and above all gorgeous. This disc is nothing short of amazing. Yet I gotta ask. Why is it that a recording of BENEDICTINE monks has a cover photo of men in FRANCISCAN robes?

good, but there are better choices

While this is a good collection & the most well-known, there are actually much better choices. For example, there is
Lost in Meditation: Meditative Gregorian Chants, Vol. 1
by Cappella Gregorianna
which is a far fresher recording with far more ambience & natural reverberation. Plus, it is about half the price as this one, which was originally recorded in the 60s & then remastered. I find this one a tad dry (& also without as much variety) compared to the "Lost in Meditation" collection. Another very good one is Mysteria by Chanticleer which has a lot of variety & excellent sound recording. (though I would still rank it lower than the Capella Gregorianna one, because some selections also sound less full, as if they were recoded in studio & not a large cathedral)
