Snow Falling on Cedars
Snow
Falling
on
Cedars
is in many ways a quiet sketch of a fictional island located in the Puget Sound area during a murder trial. But it is more. It is a beautifully sketched
novel
that explores the racism and impact of World War II, and the life and interactions of a small community of strawberry farmers and fisherman.
Kabuo Miyamoto is a Japanese man accused of the murder of Carl Heine. Ishmael Chambers, the author and editor of the island's newspaper is reporting on the trial, but he must face Hatsue Miyamoto, the accused man's wife, and Ishmael's secret boyhood love.
The true beauty of this story for me was the "flashbacks", the passages that explore the memories and lives of individuals that form their personalities and culture.
This is a novel of intricately crafted writing and beautiful language. The plot and the writing are lovely, but the story can get a little tiresome occasionally and the tone dull.
Nevertheless, I felt this was an excellent read and would recommend it.

A captivating beauty
Snow
Falling
on
Cedars
is an incredible example of thoughtful, faultless writing by David Guterson. It is about a one-armed war veteran, Ishmael Chambers, and how memories of WW2 break the dams forged by his numbness, and flood back into his mind when Carl Heine, a local fisherman, dies mysteriously on his boat. Another fisherman, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused of his murder, and it is taken to the island court.
As the court progresses, more and more memories are stirred up of the war, and how the society and people became segregated because of race. The feelings and thoughts of the characters are beautifully described with a sense of sorrow and depth that just makes your heart feel heavy. This book is like a gorgeous painting, a variety of situations and splashes of feeling give it passion and sophistication. A flawlessly wrought tale of love, war and powerful drama; I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Snow Falling On Cedars
My only complaint was that Amazon e-mailed me that it couldn't deliver on time. I went in to my account and cancelled the order but it wouldn't let me cancel the
Snow
Falling

Cedars
because it said that the book was being sent out (?) the next day. I tried to contact Amazon to reinstate the cancelled books but was not able to. Consequently I lost my shipping discount and was charged shipping for the one item only. The shipping cost as much as the book! I was not very happy with my experience and never did hear back from Amazon. I will most likely not purchase books from Amazon again as it was not my fault that the order got changed. Amazon said the order could not be completed by the specified time causing me to cancel the order but then discovering that they in fact had sent the one book out and cancelled the others. I really thought I should have received some sort of response from Amazon when the information they gave me was incorrect. At least either let me cancel/return the order or decrease the shipping cost.

Snow Falling on Cedars Book Review
On San Piedro Island a man gets murdered and a Japanese American, Kaubo Miyimoto another fisherman, is accused. During the trial, people remember and remind others of what happen during World War II. How the Japanese got sent off and how it caused so much chaos. A man will get his heart broken because of a love affair that should not have been and two unpaid payment will cost people their land. The will haunt the people who were in it for the rest of their lives.
This book is very beautifully written and I would definitely recommend it. The book was very interesting to me because it is written from several different views. Also the characters are fun but yet mysterious. Although this is a great book it can sometimes move very slowly and become a bit boring at times. I thought that David Guterson wrote this book very beautiful and if you are all about literature you would really like this book.

Excellent, But Can Be Tedious
The setting and plot of
Snow
Falling
on
Cedars
is deceptively simple. Kabuo Miyamoto is accused of and is standing trial for the murder of fisherman Carl Heine in post-World War II Puget Sound. Set in 1954, Snow Falling on Cedars is, on the surface, a courtroom drama. But it is much more than that. Delving into the horrors of the past, author David Guterson paints a picture of the lives of the poor, Asian berry farmers, their treatment during WWII, and how love between a white boy and an Asian girl can have far-reaching implications.
Thankfully, I read Snow Falling on Cedars before Our Lady of the Forest or I might never have picked up this book. I never saw the movie, either, so I was able to pick up this
novel
and appreciate it untainted. This novel was by no means a quick read. I am a very fast reader and it took me quite awhile to finish it. I attribute that to the author's layering of detail. Guterson crafted this novel in such a way that the reader must peel off each layer, like an onion. Each new layer brings a new flavor and richness to the story being told. Guterson details the prejudice the Asian farmers faced, how they were taken to determent camps during the war, and how one tiny town was forever scarred by the events of WWII.
I would definitely recommend this novel.
