Another classic from a great historian

The glowing reviews have it right so I will add a couple of notes. First, McCullough was able to place the individuals and events in such amazing historical context that I understood the facts and details as much as if I had lived in that period. He just has an amazing gift to bring history "alive."

In life, TR embodied the spirit and intellect common to our founding fathers, and Mornings on Horseback allows us to examine his formative years in a way not possible for many other important Americans. A book well worth the reading.

The Story of the Rise of a Man beyond natural abilities to greatness

This is by far one of the greatest books I have ever read. It details the amazing story of a boy with health problems who is pushed by his father to rise above these problems and not use them as a crutch. TR is able to not just rise to normal physical activity, but rather he rises above the norms and becomes an extraordinary soldier, leader, speaker and president. His fearless nature, instilled in him by his father since childhood, is seen in his bold moves as the leader of the Rough Riders and as a proactive president. McCullough is able to capture the privelaged, sophisticated upbringing as well as the adventurous westerner that lives inside the same person; Theodore Roosevelt. A great read for anyone unfamiliar with TR!

McCullough is THE MASTER!

David McCullough has the ability to write about history in a manner that is as entertaining and easy to read as a novel. He makes history come alive, and in this case, reassures us that there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to politics. It was fascinating to examine NOT the TR presidency, but the events of his early life that turned him into the irresistable force that he was at that point in his life! I am convinced that the prevailing negativity about the current political climate is due to a populace that is ill-informed about history. McCullough always reassures me when I read his work that there is NOTHING that this nation can't overcome ... that political machinations, like the weather, are cyclical ... and that the tapestry of our history is all part of what makes us such a great nation.

fascinating history

Well written and revealing early history of Teddy Roosevelt. A very inspiring story showing how one can overcome perceived weaknesses to achieve greatness.

Liked it, but not on par with Truman and Adams....

McCullough is a great writer, but this book got too detailed on things I didn't really care about.....I love the history, and believe you should read this if the topic interests you, but Truman and Adams are 2 of the greatest and this one just doesn't measure up to those....
