The Stupidest yet funniest Angel

I had this book on cd and was standing in line at the DMV so I was able to listen to the entire book while waiting. Just kidding. I was laughing out loud and getting funny looks. I told those who were not trying to avoid eye contact with me they have to buy this book is is just too funny.

A dark comedy Christmas

Raziel is back, and has been entrusted with a mission: grant a child's Christmas wish. What could be simpler for an angel? But Raziel really is the stupidest angel, and his intervention in Pine Cove's storied community is comically disastrous. This book features many of the characters from Moore's other novels, and brings us up-to-date on their lives after their earlier adventures. Also, zombies. For what would Christmas be without the undead? For me, Moore's books range from a bemused chuckle (Fluke) to tears-down-my-face, can't-breathe laughing fits (Lamb), and I would rate this book nearer Lamb than Fluke.

I Know What I'm Buying Everyone I Know for Christmas!

The Stupidest Angel does for traditional rehashed Christmas themed books what National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation did for Christmas movies. In fact I won't be surprised if this becomes a movie as well. This book has everything you need to be you in a good mood no matter how annoying those relatives are becoming.

Moore returns to Pine Cove California for the third time. Some of the town's eccentric characters inside we've met before in his first book Practical Demonkeeping, a few more were in The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove, throw in the stupidest angel Raziel from Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal and Tucker and Roberto (a talking fruit bat) from Island of the Sequined Love Nun and you've got on hell of a Christopher Moore character Christmas party. Even though its not a bad idea to have read those other novels first to fully appreciate these characters, nothing major from those storylines is revealed in this book so you can read this first if you desire.

In the Stupidest Angel Raziel is sent to earth to seek a small child and grant him a wish that can only be fulfilled by divine intervention. Now those of us who read his encounters with Biff know he is not the brightest of angels and he will demonstrate this numerous times throughout this novel as he is mistaken for a paedophile, terminator style robot, peeping tom and all kind of things by the residents of Pine Cove. Meanwhile Joshua witnesses what he believes to be the murder of Santa Claus by a madwoman with a shovel and is praying for divine intervention as he's been a good boy all year and he doesn't want to have done that for nothing. Those of you who thought the townsfolk of Pine Cove had no brains will have a very hungry mob brought about through a miracle by the hand of Raziel disprove that for you. One of Moore's funniest novels. Imagine if Carl Hiaasen and Bill Fitzhugh wrote horror/supernatural themed novels and you've got Christopher Moore!

By the way Amazon doesn't seem to sell it but there's a limited edition of this novel called Version 2.0 that comes with a bonus chapter where it is Christmas the following year and we find out what all the characters have been up to. I would have used the insert a product link to make finding it easy if Amazon sold it so with it looking like they don't you may wish to look elsewhere as well. If you've already bought this then you may want to check out your local library and see if they've got that limited release version, what better excuse do you need to revisit this great story!

MY Angle on the Angel

I'm a huge Christopher Moore fan, have enjoyed all of his writings to date, and this book met all my expectations of wit, wry humor, and warped storylines featuring many of the eccentric personalities I've grown to know and adore in Pine Cove and from other Moore books. I recommend starting with "Practical Demonkeeping" (the first book in Christopher Moore's series and the reader's intro to Pine Cove) and following his array of books in the order he's written them. All are winners, just some more special than others. Enjoy!
