A Whale (or Whale's Tail) of a Tale
When you get a
book
from a favorite author, you typically expect two things that are almost contradictory. You want something new and different, but not a radical change, because what you enjoyed about the author may disappear. You want the special something that made you like him or her, but not so much of it that it feels like you're just reading the same story with different character names. A good author will walk that fine line well, and Christopher Moore is one such writer.
Fluke
(or, I
Know
Why
the
Winged
Whale
Sings
) is typical Moore with its easy-going narration, off-beat characters and an element that is in some way either supernatural or science fictionish. On the other hand, it also is a whole different story than his other books. In this one, Nate Quinn, marine biologist who observes whales in the ocean around Hawaii, makes a strange discovery: a whale with the words "Bite Me" clearly written on its tail. His ability to investigate this phenomenon is hampered when his lab is trashed and his photographic evidence disappears.
There are plenty of potential villains, including the military (who is doing some mysterious experiments in the area, a marine foundation (that is actually just a front for a jet ski concession) and a dour scientist who is willing to sell out to the highest bidder. These folks, however, are actually mere distractions from the real cause. Nate's research, however, goes off in a different direction when he is swallowed by the whale, an act that should be impossible for that species. What's more surprising is that Nate survives ingestion.
I don't want to spoil any of what happens next, but it is sufficient to say that once again, Moore has created (in a phrase that is appropriate even if it's rather cliched) a wonderfully wacky adventure. Whether you're new to Moore or a veteran, this book will be a great read.

hands down my favorite.
This
book
is hands down my favorite of Christopher Moores books thus far. This book has a very special place in my heart beacuse it deals with my favorite and the oldest living creatures on the planet; the
whale
s. Moores imagination is unsurpassed in this very creative novel that deals with the discovery of certain secrets from the depths of the ocean. With an all star cast of misfits and unforgettable characters, Moore has easily created one of the most imaginaitive pieces of literature I have ever encountered.
Never have I ever encountered an author with such a raw sense of humor that makes me laugh hysterically. Moores ability to describe even the most akward of situations and I am just throwing this out there, but it has to do with two whales, ten foot penises and rubber suits. I honestly cannot go to deep into the details of the story, because I would not want to ruin this book for anyone. I see the dedication in the story and the time commitment that Moore has taken in the creation of this book and his efforts and execution are mesmerizing.
I litterally could not wait to finish this book, because it is one of those books that allows me to turn off everything that exists in the world and just read the captivating story. I became on the characters in the story and was there all the way to the end. If anyone enjoys a good laugh, with an incredible plot and an important message, then you should definitely read this book.

A whale of a tale.
Moore offers his readers an insight into the mysterious world of
whale
s and whale song with both facts and fiction. Through an electic cast of characters, scienctists, lesbians, a pot smoking surfer and whaley boys, Moore gives you the science of marine biology and then throws in a twist. The twist is what makes
Fluke
so enjoyable. Moore lays down a great foundation in the beginning and then tops it with an underwater world that I believe Cousteau would have sacrificed everything to have discovered. Moore
show
s great creativity in a fun and quirky manner. His style reminds me a bit of Douglas Adams. The creativity and quirkiness caused me to laugh, turn the page, shed tears, and wish I was a part of the
book
. Thanks to Moore I will never look at whales and the ocean in the same way. I loved this book and have been reccomending it to everyone that loves a good book. Enjoy!

Bite this!
This one starts out a little slow, but ends as one of my favourites. My other favs by Moore are 'the Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove' and 'Lamb.'
However, any of his
book
s are deeply satisfying.
Entertaining...
I had to read this
book
for as part of a college class. It wasn't so much to critique the book as it was to get an idea of character development. As far as characters go, the good thing about
Fluke
is that the characters are somewhat like cartoon characters. Each has their own quirks and distinct personalities. So for the point of defining characters, making each one unique and well illustrated, I think Fluke does it well.
The humor is also done well in this book if you're looking for something more grown-up than humor in movies like Dumb and Dumber but not as crass as in movies like Dodgeball.
So, yeah, this book is entertaining but not something I will read again or recommend to anyone else to read. I guess, since I had to read this book for class I was just glad it wasn't a complete bore.
