Excellent and Long Overdue

As a Christian pastor, I really enjoy my Jewish Study Bible. I appreciate the multiple scholars who wrote the study notes. This is not a preachy Study Bible, it is an academic work. But the notes are immensely helpful. You will learn a lot about the Hebrew Bible.

I have always respected the scholarship of Michael Fishbane, Carol Meyers, Jon Levenson, Jeffrey Tigay, Adele Berlin, and Marc Zvi Brettler, and the work they do here is solid. I also like how the opinions of the great rabbinical sages of the past are occasionally referenced.

There are also some articles in the back about the composition and compilation of the Tanach, and its use in Jewish liturgy. This is a wonderful anthology of Jewish knowledge, and I highly recommend it. I plan on buying one of these for my mom. It makes a great present.

Best Jewish Bible around for many reasons

Still the best translation of the Tanakh available, entertaining, poetic, and faithful to the original Hebrew while reflecting modern scholarship. The notes are useful and strike a good balance between being respectful to Jewish traditions and providing a critical, scholarly look at the text. As an added bonus there is an extensive collection of essays in the back, which may anger traditionalists or literalists, but I think reflect the best scholarship around. Essential for students of religion.

Great TaNaK Translation!

I am a Seminary Student and I just love this book. This is my favorite TaNaK translation. It is easy to read and is a very good translation of the Hebrew. Suprising how different it is than NRSV, RSV, etc. It provides some different insight into TaNaK. You should buy this book!

Best Book I Own

Of all of the books I own, this is by far my favorite. The JPS translation is excellent, and the commentary is a wonderful starting point for deeper study.
I never want to be without this book.
