A great story wonderfully told.

A marvelous blend of scholarship and literary talent. The author's love for this subject comes through in every page. He sets the stage for the conflict beautifully, using contemporary descriptions and writings to help us understand the personalities and inner conflicts of his two main subjects (Revere and Gage); and through them to explain the larger clash between cultures and ideas. He uses detail to paint a picture of the time and particularly of the days surrounding the battles of Lexington and Concord but consistently avoids the trap of cataloguing detail for its own sake. This book is truly a great read---exciting, thought provoking, enlightening.

what all history books should be

Fisher takes a single event from popular lore (and historical fact) -- paul revere's ride -- and spins a rich story about the start of the revolutionary war.
I read this along with dozens of other books in researching a book on the american revolution and this one shone above the rest.

An Amazing Book

David Hacker Fischer really wrote an amazing book with "Paul Revere's Ride." It is wonderful to learn more about the heroic ride and life of Paul Revere. Also one of the great qualities of the book is the way the author describes the fighting in Lexington and Concord. He really highlights the heroism and "citizen" nature of the militaia that goes up against the most powerful military at the time.

Another great quality of this publication is the way the author fills out the details of the life of other players involved. He details everybody from Thomas Gage, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, as well as the officers and common soldiers on both sides.

While the book is known for fact checking and setting some of the myths straight is also of course a treasure of new information, especially about the battle.

If you like history, and books that are well written, there is no doubt you will love this amazing tale from David Hackett Fischer. I hear Washington's Crossing is great as well and look forward to reading his other book.

On the path to liberty

I thought that this was an impressive book. It was well researched and had alot of amazing facts. Anyone with interest of the revolutionary war will love this book. The only reason I had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because although a great book I expected it to be alot more about Paul Revere.

The Myth of the Ride

In American History, no myth is more famous and unknown than Paul Revere's night ride. Who was this man and what did his role as messenger entail? David Hackett Fischer, Professor of History at Brandeis University, attempts to answer these among other questions.
Paul Revere's Ride is an unadorned narrative of the beginning of the American war for independence. The crucial decisions that precipitated this conflict were based on the nebulous concept of liberty. Revere, and his contemporaries, believed in the liberty granted to them as freeborn Englishmen, while Thomas Gage, Royal Governor of Massachusetts, believed in liberty constrained by the law.
The basic facts of the night ride are well known. Paul Revere did not undertake the alone being accompanied by William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott. Names of well known and lesser known New Englanders are sprinkled throughout the book, displaying their contribution to the American cause.
Paul Revere's Ride has much to teach us on the origins of the man and his country.
