Extraordinary lexicon
Of all the
Russian
translation resources I have used, in studies, translation work, and working as an interpreter for Russian friends in the States, this is by far the one that I refer to first and most, seconded only by 501 Russian Verbs. It was also one of the book I took with me on a visit to Moscow.
When trying to explain to Russian friends American
English
rather than British English, I have not found a book to equal this one.
And if you truly are looking for the translations of the genital organs, get a used copy of 1984 edition. (That's the one I am still using, paperback, and it has held up well.) Those words were all in here, but I have painstakingly blacked them out, because I didn't want to get them stuck in my head.

This is THE

Superb dictionary
Awesome
dictionary
, but I am hoping that Katzner comes up with an updated edition --- this one is still circa 1996. IMO, while still the best dictionary out there, it'd be nice to have an updated version because a lot of the popular lexicon has changed over the past 10 years.
As an aside, this is not the best dictionary for the casual student of
Russian
because oftentimes if you see a word in print, it is either conjugated or has an ending that is not in the nominative case. That said, you may have to work backwards from there to determine the actual noun/verb. In Katzner's defense, though, a Russian dictionary that gave every case and conjugation would be exhaustive --- yes, they do exist, but they aren't 1000 pages like this one.

Great for beginner
I am just beginning to learn
russian
and this is a great help alongside other educational means. I wish it had more information as to the different cases of Russian nouns, but I am learning this gradually.
Just short of being a great dictionary
I found most of the
dictionary
to be very helpful. However there were some words that were a little hard to determine the right usage or find. The
Russian
language does has many words with multiple meanings or multiple words with the same meaning; more so than
English
. I also found a few words on the Russian side that were missing, at least when cross-matched with the English counterpart.
