Inspiring Natural Childbirth Book
I'll admit it took me a while to get over the way that Ina May and others in this book speak. At first I found it distracting, but once I got into the mentality of The Farm, I found this book very inspiring. It contains a lot of very detailed information on anatomy and the practice of
midwifery
, but the best part is the stories. This book is packed full of real-life accounts of natural births- some good, some bad, but all amazing. When I finished, I felt empowered to give birth naturally and able to take control of my own pregnancy and labor. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering natural childbirth.

A Classic With An Interesting Outlook And A Valuable Perspective On A Gentle Birth
This was on a list of several books we could read for extra credit in a sociology course (which was about social mores and attitudes in the 1960's and 1970's) I took some years ago, and I selected it for a paper I wrote to keep up my GPA. When I was done with it, my outlook on this subject was subtly altered. As a reflection of the ideals and perceptions of a subcultural segment of our population, I found this book interesting and significant in its message. As a critique-via-contrast of "mainstream" maternity practices, I regarded this book as revolutionary for its time. Some of what was herein advocated has been adopted on a wide scale in the thirty years since its original publication, although by and large the doctrine that each birth is a
spiritual
process has largely gone unappreciated. I respect the viewpoint of Ms. Gaskin and the other "Farm" midwives who contributed to this book. I agree that there is a certain spirituality to the event of childbirth, and am with them that the (too often intrinsically violent) process of birth adopted in modern American society, with its hospital "assembly line" style obstetrical routines, and elective money-driven procedures is little short of barbaric. Over the years since this groundbreaking classic was penned, an alternative to both the hospital and home birth has arisen in the form of the "birthing suite" which allows the mother and loved ones of her choosing to be present at whatever birthing experience is wished, yet also keeps medical help on hand, though out of sight. I credit this book and several others like it that were released in the 1970's with pioneering so much of what has changed for the better since the days of ghastly birthing procedures, like forceps, routine episiotomies, and the administration of knockout gasses like "twilight." Hopefully there will come a time when all deliveries are peaceful, loving events, trauma-free for mother and baby alike, and Spiritual
Midwifery
will have been in the vanguard of that movement.
