Incredible

Rob Bell is an incredible exegete. In a time when much Biblical teaching is being watered down for the sake of "relevance," Rob does a great job of explaining the biblical texts while making it meaningful. His cultural research and understanding is outstanding. I highly recommend this book to anybody-I will be telling all the young adults I know to read it ASAP.

Amazing

My boss kept telling me to get this book. So, finally, after one of the hardest days I've had in a long time, I went and got it. And it was the best $20 spent in quite a while. It makes complete sense to me. And I don't deem myself as highly religious or spiritual. Of course, the title is quite misleading but it's perfect marketing. The section on "lust" hit me like a ton of bricks. Of course! We constantly go after something we think will make us whole or happy...like clothes, electronics, sex. And it does make us happy...for a short time. But then it leaves us empty and wanting more. So we go after more. It's a vicious cycle! Of course, it takes a lot of willpower not to give into our desires, our wants, our addictions. But at least striving to do so can make you into the strong person you probably didn't think you could be.

I would reccommend this book to anyone. Regardless of faith or where they are in life. It certainly makes you think.

What it's all about

As I have read through some of these reviews I am sad to say that I believe that people have been misguided by simply the title of the book. Personally I am a huge Bell fan and I understand that this lends me biases that others do not share. This aside though, I believe that Bell does and amazing job lending and ear to the topic of sex without saying "This is what it's all about" sex as I feel he points out, is much deeper than that. I think this book is a great read and is a true help to those who are curious about what God feels on this topic without sounding patronizing to the believer or non believer. I see Bell as the man I would like to get to know and pick his brain apart because he brings a new fresh view to some outdated philosophies. By mixing sound theology with a monologue style of writing his books are not only hard hitting but also extremely relatable.

Many good thoughts, but planted in shallow soil

Briefly, Bell does a good job of making some connections between our sexuality and God's love for His people. This is a major theme in Scripture, and Bell does well to reflect on this a bit. I especially liked his section on the "Chupah." He also did a good job of not falling into a kind of dualism between the spiritual and the physical. Clearly God gave us bodies, and they are to be enjoyed, and we will have bodies forever (though fortunately, not these 'lowly bodies' that we currently have.).

But I came away wanting more, more of God. Bell makes it clear that people "are worth dying for," but why? Is it because WE are infinitely valuable, or is it because the glory and goodness of the Sovereign God of everything is infinitely valuable? Further, and I can't believe virtually all the reviewers missed this, Bell's explanation of "mutual submission" is thoroughly misguided and muddled. Egalitarian interpretations of the Bible are clearly incorrect, but Bell's is not even a good attempt, being so reductionistic as to be absurd. He also plays fast and loose with the Greek, meaning that he takes Greek words, pulls them out of their context, and gives them a de-contextualized 'definition.' This etymologization is bad news. It would be like pulling the word "cowboy" out of the English and saying to a non-English speaker, "This word comes from the words 'cow' and 'boy' and so we can see that we are talking about boys who work with cows." Unfortunately, too many Bible teachers do this with the Greek, and it is unfortunate to say the least.

Overall, I didn't gain a lot of insight from this book. It did not cause me to reflect on the deeper aspects of my sexuality and how such things might point me to God Himself. As I said, it tried to cover a lot of breadth, but didn't go very deep.
