In this profound message from one of the great thinkers of our generation, Zacharias explores the inner feeling of futility that can overwhelm a human heart and helps us to see a reason for our suffering, be comforted in loneliness, and experience an abiding faith in our daily lives. Cries of the Heart is a book that both inspires and reassures?a search that uncovers our hidden sentiments and reveals God's continual inescapable presence in every moment of our lives.

"No good deed goes unpunished."

You have to hand it to Dr. Zacharias. He is able the bridge the gap between the head and the heart, something that both Casanova and Mr. Spock could never do!

This books focuses on the problem of pain, so it should be read in conjunction with C. S. Lewis? book of the same name. I think Dr. Z?s most profound (and lacerating) question in this book is ?If it is right, why do I feel so bad?? We know we are supposed to do things that are right, but we always get flack or into deeper trouble for doing them. I think the saw is ?No good deed goes unpunished,? and Dr. Z tackles this problem head on!

He spends time dealing with Job as a test case, and devotes an appendix to dealing with problem of pain.

Personally, and all pretences of scholastic impartiality aside, I found this book helpful. In a deep philosophical sense, we have to have evil, at least potentially, to make sense of life. In my own religious tradition, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it is written in the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, that

? For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so . . . righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility. Wherefore, it must needs have been created for a thing of naught; wherefore there would have been no purpose in the end of its creation. Wherefore, this thing must needs destroy the wisdom of God and his eternal purposes, and also the power, and the mercy, and the justice of God.? (2 Nephi 2:11-12)

The strength of character comes from going upstream, against to flow. Look at Buddah?he was living a posh lifestyle, but he gave it up, since there was no opposition in his life. His life only became meaningful once he was placed in the realm of choice.

It is true that Christianity has become counter-culture. We need to explore the duifffences and accentuate them!

Cries of the Heart

I have purchased this book several times and have read it and then I give it away to friends and acquaintances. It is a very good book.

A must read in this world of pain and sorrow

Ravi Zacharias hits the nail on the head with this one. One of the best books I have ever read. Whether you are an avid reader of religious materials or not, Ravi uses easy to understand illustrations to answer and explain some of lifes most puzzling questions. Great gift for someone who has or is going through some difficult trials in life and is wondering why.

Deep Thinker

I first became familiar with Ravi on Sunday a.m. radio on the local Christian station. His voice irritated me, but his messages were loud and very clear. I enjoyed listening to him so I bought this book based on other's reviews. It is an outstanding thought-provoking Christian oriented book. This man speaks with logic and intelligence. I had to read and re-read many parts because of the depth of the subjects he addresses. But I thoroughly enjoyed his message and interpretations.

Little nuggets of truth,

Some might read this book for its deep philisophical and theological truths, but when I read this book I was looking for God to speak to me about a certain situation in my life. I was not disappointed. My favorite chapter was "The Cry to Feel My Faith". Zacharias challenges the reader to ask themself what emotional trappings, prejudices, insecurities, and indisciplines have you brought to your relationship with God? He goes into great depth to answer this question, but to put it very simply Zacharias says at the end of the chapter, "Bring your feelings to the cross. Entrust them into his care, and he will guard them for you."

I would recommend this book to anyone going through a time of suffering, or if you just have some basic questions about your relationship with God. Be prepared, however, to spend a little extra time reading this book it is deep!
