Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has just done the unthinkable. She?s made a mistake so huge, it?ll wreck any chance of a partnership. Going into utter meltdown, she walks out of her London office, gets on a train, and ends up in the middle of nowhere. Asking for directions at a big, beautiful house, she?s mistaken for an interviewee and finds herself being offered a job as housekeeper. Her employers have no idea they?ve hired a lawyer?and Samantha has no idea how to work the oven. She can?t sew on a button, bake a potato, or get the #@%# ironing board to open. How she takes a deep breath and begins to cope?and finds love?is a story as delicious as the bread she learns to bake. But will her old life ever catch up with her? And if it does?will she want it back?

Light and fun - just uncomplicated enjoyment.
I bought this book at an airport while having massive delays and aggravation. After reading it for 15 minutes I was laughing and enjoying my time despite travel issues. Sophie is funny and light - nothing heavy and political. I am reading her 4th book now - she's great - keep them coming!!!
Become a Kinsella Fan!
If this is your first encounter with Sophie Kinsella's joyous writing, you will not be disappointed and will be eager to read more of her work. For those fans of the Shopaholic series, this book will be another addition to your collection of fabulous, fun reads in the Kinsella style! However, be warned that Samantha Sweeting is not Becky Bloomwood. Although Bloomwood from the Shopaholic series is great fun and addictive reading, with Samantha Sweeting, Kinsella brings more depth to the main character.
Sweeting is a lawyer nearing her 30's and on her way to becoming a partner in a prestigious law firm. However, her work is her life spurred on by an over achieving mother and what Samantha has thought is the life she really wants. When she discovers a crash-and-burn mistake she made at her Carter Spink Law Firm, and that it will cost the firm dearly, she flees London with no thoughts in mind as to where she is going or what she will do.
This is what brings Samantha Sweeting to a tiny suburb of London and to the home of Trish and Eddie Geiger. The Geigers mistake Samantha for a housekeeping job applicant they had been expecting. In her frantic need to get away from the problems in London, Samantha goes along with the mistaken identity and takes the job thinking it will at least give her a place to stay for a few days to think things through. She fails to consider the fact that a housekeeper is expected to cook and clean, something that is low on Samantha's list of qualifications. Cooking to her means "order in", and cleaning is something that miraculously has happened when she gets home from the firm and the help has taken care of things. With the reader's imagination allowing for a few impractical and unreal situations, Samantha is able to fool the Geigers with her quick thinking and chicanery.
Things go fine for a bit until Samantha encounters a wise and dreamy gardener who is not so blind to what she is doing. With "creative" genius, Samantha keeps things going in the house for a while but the gorgeous and clever gardener becomes a problem as she finds herself attracted to him. The hilarious situations, quirky almost believable characters, and a Samantha that you care about, is what Kinsella creates in The
Undomestic
Goddess
and what makes for an enjoyable, funny, and light read that will entertain you and keep you turning the pages to find out what happens to Samantha.

If you ever wanted to run away from work screaming
...you would understand the story line of this book. It captures the life of a workaholic who only realizes she is one when her whole world comes crashing down on her. I don't think this has anything against driven career women but more on people becoming unaware that work consumes everything else in their lives. And that sometimes, what we think we want is not really what we want or need. It's not totally far-fetched. I've read about doctor who became a musician, another professional (I don't remember what) becoming a baker. I had fun reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light summer read.

A Great Summer Read
When I first picked up this book, my expectations were low. I wanted a quick, witty, predictable read, which wouldn't strain my brain, and allow me to indulge in a little down-time.
Well, The
Undomestic
Goddess
proved to be both quick and witty, but definitely not predictable.
The plot is simple enough - 29 year-old Samantha has lost her job as a high-powered lawyer, due to a rather unfortunate mistake she has made in the office. And so to escape her past, Samantha disappears off into the country, to take up the role as housekeeper for an affluent English couple. The only problem is that Samantha has claimed to be a cordon bleu chef, when if fact, she knows absolutely nothing about cooking or housekeeping. Mayhem ensues as Samatha tries to work out how to prepare more than just toast, while trying to hide her previous identity as a lawyer.
The Undomestic Goddess could have been a predictable fairy-tale read for adults, but somehow, Sophie Kinsella has managed to make this story plausible, by adding some fascinating little twists to the plot. Kinsella has also created an endearing character in Samantha, who is struggling, like every other woman, to balance her priorities in life.
The Undomestic Goddess is a great summer read that is fun, clever and highly entertaining.

Not the best Kinsella book
This book is about Samantha. She is a lawyer and a total workaholic. She has no private life, no weekends, and her family are all workaholics too. The day she gets promoted to be a partner for her law firm she realizes that she made a stupid mistake in one of her contracts that costs her firm 50 million pounds. She totally freaks out and runs away. Because of a stupid missunderstanding she ends up working as housekeeper for a new-money family. She has no idea what she is doing because she has never ever cooked before or has done any other housework. It is a complete disaster but the gardner, Nathaniel, is the only one that sees that she is a fake. He helps her out and she starts to loosen up and starts to realize that there are other things in live than work.
The book was ok. It was very well written but it was also full of cliches. The story was pretty predictable and the ending a little too cheazy for my taste. It was totally ok if you want to read something lite
