Walking around New York City was what Mitty Blake did best. He loved the city, and even after 9/11, he always felt safe. Mitty was a carefree guy?he didn?t worry about terrorists or blackouts or grades or anything, which is why he was late getting started on his Advanced Bio report.
Mitty does feel a little pressure to hand something in?if he doesn?t, he?ll be switched out of Advanced Bio, which would be unfortunate since Olivia?s in Advanced Bio. So he considers it good luck when he finds some old medical books in his family?s weekend house that focus on something he could write about. But when he discovers an old envelope with two scabs in one of the books, the report is no longer about the grade?it?s about life and death. His own.
This edge-of-your-seat thriller will leave you breathless.

This is an outstanding book. Very contemporary and the students who have read it with me highly recommend it. The references are current and the topic is very real. I would recommend this to any high school student and to all health classes!

by Caroline Cooney, procrastinator Mitty Blake has put off his biology research project for too long. At the last minute, he digs up some antique medical books from to use as references for his bibliography. He finds an envelope inside one of the books with the word "variola" written on the outside. Inside are several scabs. Mitty thinks he's hit the jackpot until he starts to learn more about the disease: small pox. He fears he may have contracted the disease. He goes online and emails several places, asking if the virus could still be active. During his questioning, he unknowingly informs a terrorist group, who kidnaps him, hoping to use him as a human biological weapon against the city of New York.
I enjoyed seeing slacker Mitty turn hero when his city, New York, is threatened. With references to the devastation in 9/11, Cooney gets
readers
to think about the ultimate question: would you give your life to save your country? Code Orange is an exciting, suspenseful page turner. I highly recommend it to readers of all ages.

The danger of insufficient knowledge
Teen put into peril after posting on the Internet, his discovery of old scabs from a Smallpox epidemic.
I found this somewhat believable, as both the boy and his terrioist captors, do not know enough about Smallpox.
Parents should read first, as the resolution may be objectionable to some, or need discussion.
