He holds the secret that can end the world.
The truth:
Nicholas
Flamel
was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest
Alchemyst
of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life.
The records show that he died in 1418.
But his tomb is empty.
The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects?the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it.
Sometimes legends are true.
And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

GREAT book to start a great series!
Anyone who liked the Harry Potter series will LOVE this series. It is inventive and fascinating! It is a very easy read for all ages.
Easy to read, explore imagination.
Interesting story. I picked it up in the library and read it from cover to cover. It reminds me of Harry Potter.
Excellent book
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book other than magic and adventure. On the first page I was hooked. For me a book has to start good and stay good all the way through, this did that. I immediatley loved Josh and Sophie and their closeness thoughout this book his heartwarming. I can't say I've loved
Nicholas
Flamel
, he's a very strong character (hence it's his story) but he's not the one I found myself wanting to follow. Scatty is great, the perfect warrior. Dee is the perfect bad guy, he's cunning, sly, and very bad. I loved how this book took our modern age, mixed it with magic and mythology. A true page turner that does leave you hanging. After finishing this book you will have to read the next book. I myself cannot wait to read the next installment. Truly a book I'll keep on my bookshelf to be read again, the adventure is that good, for adults and children.

Da Vinci Code for younger readers??
Readers grade 5/6 and up may enjoy this fast-paced mix of myths, the myriad of characters, the inclusion of modern gadgets and the easy sentence structure. However, most characters are flat, cliffhangers at the end of each chapter remind us of "The Da Vinci Code", and the author's habit of endlessly repeating facts and sentences really spoils the fun.
The author doesn't give anyone the smallest change to wonder about the character's feelings or motivations: We are being TOLD, without mercy!
Events are piled up, monster upon monster, challenge upon challenge, barely time to catch a breath and all in two days' time. No wonder, the main characters- the "twins of legend" (and don't you dare forget it!) Sophie and Josh, are exhausted all the time and

ages before our very eyes.
And yet, I will probably read the sequel to find out what happened to Scatty.....
