Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: Twenty-three of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you?ll ever encounter?sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined ?Writers? Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months,? and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of ?real life? that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them. But ?here? turns out to be a cavernous and ornate old theater where they are utterly isolated from the outside world?and where heat and power and, most important, food are in increasingly short supply. And the more desperate the circumstances become, the more extreme the stories they tell?and the more devious their machinations become to make themselves the hero of the inevitable play/movie/nonfiction blockbuster that will surely be made from their plight.

Haunted is on one level a satire of reality television? The Real World meets Alive. It draws from a great literary tradition? The Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, the English storytellers in the Villa Diodati who produced, among other works, Frankenstein?to tell an utterly contemporary tale of people desperate that their story be told at any cost. Appallingly entertaining, Haunted is Chuck Palahniuk at his finest?which means his most extreme and his most provocative.

Fantastic book...

Haunted is an amazing book. It hooked me from the start, I just had to know how the book was going to end. This book is disturbing, shocking and appalling. But the fact that this book is so deranged is exactly what makes it enjoyable. Chuck Palahniuk has some serious talent for writing, I love reading his work to find out what is going on in his mind. Haunted is not for everyone, light headed/weak stomach people need to keep away from Haunted. If you enjoy reading novels outside of the 'norm,' then this is the book for you. Overall, Haunted gets an A+ grade from me.

Disturbing, but Rings True

And the fact some of these stories do ring true might be the most disturbing thing of all.

While reading, I was alternately disgusted, horrified, and amused. I was most uncomfortable when Palahniuk's characters expressed thoughts I could identify with...but that is where this writer's strength comes from. He gives life to ideas and beliefs many of us have, but keep buried deep under our civilized veneer.

The best element of this book is the short stories that make up the meat and potatoes of the meal. The in-between narration--the veggies--is a little lacking, uninspired. It's almost as if you can feel this is just filler material; it keeps everything stuck together, fulfils a vital function, but green beans aren't my favorite part of the meal. At each interlude, I found myself wanting to skip ahead to read the next story, in order to unravel more of the overall picture.

If you're a fan of horror, "gross-out," psychology, mystery, or any combination this will be a...worthwhile read, if not a strictly enjoyable one.

An elaborate "Tales From The Crypt" for our apocalyptic age

I'd never really heard of Chuck Palahniuk until seeing the film adaptation of "Fight Club," which I though was an absolutely brilliant movie. After learning a little of the author's cultlike status and reading a review of "Haunted," I borrowed it from the library and began reading ... and put it down after 30 pages or so; it just didn't seem like my cup of tea. Very recently I read his new novel "Snuff," and while it was a rather pungent look into the porn industry, I thought maybe Palahniuk might have done better work. So I tried giving "Haunted" another try, and ended up enjoying it a lot more the second time around. It's been described as a satirical take on the "Reality TV" phenomenom ... but as I read it, I couldn't help thinking that at some point in his past Palahniuk might have been familiar with the movie and/or novelization of "Tales From The Crypt," because "Haunted" seems a lot like that, only more elaborate and MUCH more graphic.

The backstories of the characters in this novel is revealed in the short stories interspersed throughout the book, and these short stories are the book's strongest aspect. There's a lot of tragedy here, some wicked and ghastly humor, and healthy doses of nasty stuff involving the human body. What more can I say? After seeing "Fight Club" and reading "Snuff" and "Haunted," I can see where Chuck Palahniuk is coming from, what sort of worldview he has. And it's not for everyone. Hell, it's not for MOST people. But it's certainly different.

Crazy good book

This book jumps between three 'sections' each relate to the characters but in different ways, such as stories written by the characters which help you to understand their backgrounds better.
