In 1935, with a doctorate in art history and no prospect of a job, the 26-year-old Ernst Gombrich was invited by a publishing acquaintance to attempt a history of the world for younger readers. Amazingly, he completed the task in an intense six weeks, and Eine kurze Weltgeschichte für junge Leser was published in Vienna to immediate success, and is now available in seventeen languages across the world.

Toward the end of his long life, Gombrich embarked upon a revision and, at last, an English translation. A Little History of the World presents his lively and involving history to English-language readers for the first time. Superbly designed and freshly illustrated, this is a book to be savored and collected.

In forty concise chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic bomb. In between emerges a colorful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art, and the spread and limitations of science. This is a text dominated not by dates and facts, but by the sweep of mankind?s experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity?s achievements and an acute witness to its frailties.

The product of a generous and humane sensibility, this timeless account makes intelligible the full span of human history.

makes up for white trash private school education

In trying to compensate for my white trash/private school education, I found this book, as well as the science book "The Canon" by Natalie Angier extremely helpful. The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science

One of a kind

What a phenomenal summary of the world... Who else can condense Napoleon or the Crusades in one page or less? Really informative, especially for a history-idiot like myself. This book ignited a passion for me to read more about history! As an author, I wish I could write something as laconic and succinct!

highly educational

I read this to my boys and we learned tons together. I have a degree in history, but was taught a great deal. The writing is warm and easy to follow. Gombrich includes his interpretation of events but is very respectful to all groups involved. I think it would be very helpful to all college history students to start with a course based on this book or one similar. It just puts all of human history into a concise linear perspective. Later courses would put meat on the skeleton. My education isolated periods from how they related to each other. This book will help you understand how in the world we got where we are today.

History Made Easy & Fun

This book clearly meant for young readers is engrossing for adults also. Makes what many believe to be boring fun!

An excellent book with some drawbacks

This is an excellent introductory book of world history. Some categorize this as a children's book, I disagree. Although the text is easy to read, some passages are not straight forward and are filled with so many history facts that I doubt children can digest all of them at once.

I enjoyed reading this book as an adult, and would surely recommend it to people who are looking for an Introduction to World History. However, when I have finished reading it, I felt as though this book is still missing something that I wished it had provided.
