During World War II, one of the most vital, dangerous and deadly operations in the war with Japan was the U.S. aerial campaign on Japanese ships. Courageous U.S. Navy, Army Air Corps and Marine crews struck at Japanese ships in an attempt to deplete supplies and sink firepower. All too often the men who risked their lives lost them on these missions in unfriendly skies. This breakthrough book contains many stunning photos that have never before been published. There are numerous superb, high-resolution photos of aircraft vs. ship combat and the aftermath of these battles. This is an important aspect of the war that has been largely ignored, but this book covers it in dramatic fashion that is sure to fascinate aviation and military history readers.

Ship Strike:Pacific

This is a wonderfully illustrated summary of the major sea actions of the Pacific War....but with major differences from previous works on the subject. Many of the photos are previously unpublished and the authors' description and vantage point is unique. The treatment of the Bismark Sea battle and the battles around Leyte Gulf are particularly exciting with their fresh perspectives. If you have an interest in the Pacific War, you will want this reasonably priced work.
BTW...in the interest of full disclosure, I am the authors' father and taught him everything he knows. He did well on this one!

Excellent photo account of the Pacific War

As a Pacific war and aviation enthusiast, I saw this book and immediately decided I needed to get it. I am always a bit nervous about buying books sight unseen, but I was pleasantly surprised after seeing it in person. There are a lot of "filler" pictures of the men and machines of the Pacific war, but as this is a book with a degree of text, as opposed to just being a picture book, this is just right, and adds to the book. The really great part of the book however, are the gun camera pictures, some of which are fantastic, and which I have never seen before. There is one particularly memorable image where you can actually see the splinters flying off of the deck and lifeboat of a Japanese cargo ship as it is strafed by a B-25; very cool. If you are interested in the Pacific theater or have other books of gun camera footage, I think you will find this to be a great addition with many new pictures that have been previously unseen.

Disappointing . . after all it's so highly ranked

I am always fasinated in that period of military history during WWII, especially the Pacific theatre. People like me would usually find as much navy battle pictorials as possible to match/enlight the moment of reality we cast our imagination to base upon.
Why I don't take this book as a 5 stars?
1) Though well balanced between the portions of texts and photos, its type setting is not helping to improve readibility. And obviously, the context does not match well with the photos on the same page. 2) Since this is documentary of war history, many events are lack of description of when and where it took place. Begining reader in this complicated warfare scope would
be hard to built a broad overview. 3) In terms of picture selection, I find just 20% of the photos are new or with visual impact. 40% are images from public domain, only 8% considered clear shots (not easy from pilots), 50% of naval battle scenes were taken from high altitute, warships in such case are hard to be identified. The TBD Dauntless Divers, which mentioned in the book over and over, just has 3 tiny photos, Gruman Avenger Torpedo bomber, none; F6 Hellcat, one picture . . 4) If readers are looking for great fleet images or wide range of types of navy ships under strike, this book provides just a few and instead many convoy cargo ships under attack . . 5) Many well known turning point battles are skiped in this book. I would so recommend to who already have solid idea about Pacific Warfares and overall this book looks 4 stars to me if not less. For the sake of similar comparsion, I find "D-Days in the Pacific" --- by Donald L.Miller (Mar 2005) produces more delibrate strike to me.
