You have an idea. A great idea. Now what? Whether you dream of having your name on the cover of a successful book (and 81% of Americans believe they have a book in them), or you?re a seasoned yet frustrated veteran of the publishing jungle, this nuts-and-bolts guide demystifies every aspect of the publishing process.

Husband-and-wife team Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, who developed the enormously popular Putting Your Passion into Print seminar at Stanford University, are known to their students as ?the Click and Clack of publishing.? Whether the thought is large (how does one deal with rejection) or small (why is it that a ?special pen? works such magic), they cover all the bases. How to:

Choose a top-of-the-heap idea;Come up with a blockbuster title; Craft an attention-getting pitch; Create a selling proposal; Find the right agent, publisher and editor; Understand a book contract and royalty statements; Enhance presentation skills; Develop sales, marketing, and publicity savvy; and, if necessary, self-publish (as did Irma Rombauer for The Joy of Cooking and James Redfield for The Celestine Prophesy).

No matter if you?re a literary fiction writer, a romance novelist, an academic looking to reach a popular audience, or a memoirist wanting to publish your life story, Putting Your Passion to Printshares a wealth of experience and insight from people who?ve been there and done that. Includes interviews with hundreds of publishing insiders?agents, editors, authors, and booksellers; side boxes featuring real-life publishing success stories; sample proposals, query letters, a resource guide, and more.

I find this book a wonderful resource for a newbie like myself to the publishing world, and fun and easy to read besides!

ALL AUTHORS SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK!

My Husband Ran Off with the Nanny and God Do I Miss Her

THIS BOOK IS A MUST-HAVE! I know, you're probably thinking, "What does Tracy Davis know?" I know that these 2 authors wrote the Bible for me during and after (now) the entire process from your desire to write a book; how to choose your subject matter and learn about it's market value and the target audience; exactly how to write your proposals, write the book, write the query letters, what to expect from agents and how to get their interest; the pros and cons of fiction/non-fiction; to use or not to use an agent, a publicist, or self publisher; how to handle rejection; how you're going to feel; when the right time is to even bring your diamond out for people to see; negotioations, detailed marketing strategies,-- you name it!

I cannot say enough about how helpful, inspiring and dead-on this book is. And it is written in such a style that it keeps your passion alive! MY HUSBAND RAN OFF WITH THE NANNY AND GOD DO I MISS HER is a fantastic, funny, bittersweet story geered to women, especially divorced and single mothers. The process? This book helped make it happen. Truly!!!!

Get a clue on publishing a book...successfully!

If you are new to the publishing business or are even "thinking" about writing a book, this will sit you down, make you laugh and shine a very bright light down the path to how to get it done, successfully.

newbie

Though I would never imagine using only a single source for all my research on getting published successfully, I can safely say this will remain one of my key books on referencing the topic. There's a ton of excellent information, and it's an easy read. The success stories laced throughout are also an inspiration to keep pushing ahead. What could be an incredibly dull topic was made out to be entertaining, informative, and very usefull for my own endeavors.
Highly recommended from a newbie's perspective.

A Real Eye-Opener!

I'm currently writing my first book and so I picked up "Putting Your Passion Into Print" to investigate the possibilities for publishing it. What a shock! After having read it, I no longer have any real desire to publish my book. What I got out of "Putting Your Passion Into Print" is that you, the author, are responsible for everything. Forget about writing! You'll be too busy with a thousand other petty things. And don't expect any help from your publisher.

This book really tells it like it is! Publishing is a cut-throat business, and if you want your book to be successful, you've got to be a tough businessman, a marketing whiz and an executive secretary all rolled into one.

I got the impression from reading this very detailed book--and, believe me, the authors leave no stone unturned--that it is aimed more at people who are looking to make a bundle by writing bestsellers. Idealistic people like me, who are simply slaving away out of "Passion" because they want to share something important with humanity and posterity, should go another route.

Highly recommended for daydreaming, want-to-be authors, if only to scare the hell out them. Thank you so much, Arielle and David, for opening my eyes!

(The book probably deserves 5 stars, but I gave it 4 because after reading through 300 pages of the traditional way of doing things, I was so much looking forward to an equally detailed treatment of "Self-Publishing," which was disappointing in its brevity and repetition of things already said in the previous chapters.)
